Local Boy Found Dead, Mother Facing Charges of Abuse
Posted: Sep 28, 2011 9:22 PM by Spencer Lubitz - slubitz@kristv.com
CALALLEN - A local family is mourning the loss of a four-year old boy who died weeks after sustaining burns all over his body.
That boy's mother and her boyfriend were arrested for the crime in Gainesville, Texas late Wednesday morning.
4-year old Nathan De Alejandro had stopped breathing early Saturday morning.
Gainesville police officers found a neighbor performing CPR on the boy in front of a home in the 900 block of Dover.
He was pronounced dead just hours later.
"He was being abused," said Lisa Villarreal, the boy's aunt. "We really don't know all the facts but, that is more than likely what lead to his death. He was being abused."
Gainesville police arrested the boy's mother, Catrina Maldonado, a former Calallen resident, and her boyfriend John Earl Alexander.
The pair has been charged with injury to a child, after the boy's small body had been largely burned just a few weeks ago.
"I don't understand how a mother could to that to her child. Or allow anyone to do that to her children," Villarreal said.
His aunts say after the allegations of abuse surfaced, Nathan's father was due to get full custody of the boy.
They say Nathan was supposed head back to Calallen for good this weekend.
Instead, he'll be coming home to be buried.
"It's hard you know. A child doesn't deserve anything like that at all," Villarreal said.
"Hopefully they're going for capital murder," said Maria Resendez, another aunt. "So hopefully that's what she's going to be charged with, both of them."
The family said because of the extent of his burns, the funeral will be closed-casket ceremony.
A benefit BBQ and softball tournament will be held in honor of Nathan de Alejandro.
The benefit gets underway Saturday, October 1st at Noon.
It will be held in 4800 block of Ramos street over in the Calallen area.
BBQ plates cost $7, and proceeds will benefit Nathan's funeral costs.
Donations can also be made at Coastal Community & Teacher Credit Union c/o Nathan DeAlejandro. Acct# 4505710

Family Holds Benefit for Calallen Child's Funeral

CORPUS CHRISTI - A Calallen family held a benefit today in honor of a four-year old boy who died several weeks after sustaining burns all over his body.
Calallen native Nathan Daniel DeAlejandro died in Gainesville on September 23rd. The boy had severe burns all over his body, but the exact cause of his death is not yet confirmed. Gainesville police arrested the boy's mother , Catrina Maldonado, and her boyfriend, Johnny Lee Alexander for injury to a child. Alexander's parents, 58-year old Johnny Lee and Matilda Alexander were also taken into custody for injury to a child.
Today the family held a barbecue in Calallen to raise money for Nathan's funeral. Christopher DeAlejandro, the boy's father, flew in from Gainesville with his beloved son's body. He was out of town in hopes of gaining full custody of his son, after allegations the boy was being abused. Now he's back home, raising money for his son's funeral.
DeAlejandro says he knew something was wrong when the boy's mother alienated herself from the family, "They wouldn't let us talk to him. Nobody could see him any more, so nobody really knew anything," explained DeAlejandro.
Nathan's maternal grandmother, Debbie Ramirez says her daughter's boyfriend is to blame for her extreme change in character. "It's horrible. She wasn't raised that way. She wasn't that kind of mother before she got around this person that got her into drugs. She was a good mother at one point, but somewhere along the line she lost it," said Ramirez. She says she tried to contact her daughter multiple times before the boy's death, but was unsuccessful. She says if she knew Nathan was hurt, she would have done more. "I'm ashamed. I'm very ashamed of what she was capable of doing," she said. Now the family waits to find out exactly what happened to the boy.
The family is accepting donations for Nathan Daniel DeAlejandro at Coastal Community and Teachers Credit Union. The account number is 4505710.
