A couple charged in the case of a toddler
found with iron burns on both arms and other injuries pleaded not guilty
in Judge Wendy Berger’s courtroom Thursday.
Elanna Joy Glenn, 21, and her husband, Terry Paul Glenn, 50, were
charged with felony neglect of a child causing great bodily harm after
family members called police about Elanna Glenn’s son.
Terry Glenn, clothed in a fluorescent green jail suit with red-rimmed
glasses atop his head, seemed buoyant as he stood before the judge.
He smiled and made eye contact with media cameras shortly before entering the plea and receiving a January pre-trial date.
But Elanna Glenn, hair swept back into a braid and dressed in county
jail blue suit, had trouble with the not guilty plea court-appointed
attorney Jill Barger entered on her behalf.
“I don’t agree with that,” she said. “I want to plead no contest.”
Barger was not in the court room.
The judge said that since Elanna Glenn’s attorney was not there, she could not enter the plea unless she represented herself.
“I’ll represent myself,” she said. “I don’t think it would benefit me
to go to trial. I don’t feel it will be sufficient for me.”
She said she knew “females sitting in the county jail for eight or nine months without (Barger) coming to see them.”
“That’s not true,” Berger said.
Glenn appeared to waiver when Assistant State Attorney Josh Alexander
told her the state was seeking 10 years in state prison followed by
five years probation.
“I’m not doing 10 years,” she said. “I don’t want to go to prison for 10 years, no, no ma’am.”
Assistant Public Defender John Morris approached her and whispered something in her ear.
She then withdrew her plea and agreed to be represented by Barger.
A few minutes later, she went back to her seat, shackles clanking. Her face was red with tears.
She was given a January pre-trial.
