Ashton Responds To Criticism Of Casey Book WESH
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The former prosecutor in the Casey Anthony trial responded to feedback Monday after the release of his book about the Casey Anthony trial.
"People will say nasty things; people will say complimentary things," said Ashton.
In the book "Imperfect Justice," Ashton described Anthony as a "world-class liar," and he called her attorney, Jose Baez, "underhanded" and the jury "lazy."
Much of the online reaction revolved around the possibility of Ashton earning a fortune in the wake of the trial.
One person wrote, "He should change the title of his book to 'Imperfect Justice: Florida's choice to hire the incompetent." Another wrote, "This guy more than proved his case. Love to read his book. Good for him."
Ashton said the book was born of passion, not profit.
"People were so upset with the outcome that I felt like I needed to give them something to not accept the verdict because a lot of people never will, but a way to deal with it," said Ashton.
Ashton stated in the book that he didn't think the death penalty would hold up against Anthony, and that that was the state attorney's decision.
"The state attorney decided that it should be a death-penalty case, and at his insistence, we go with that," said Ashton. "The ultimate decision to waive the death penalty, or in this case to reinstate it, was Lawson Lamar's decision."
Another criticism Ashton is weathering is that he revealed Anthony told two psychologists in depositions that she was molested as a child by her father and that she suspected George Anthony of murdering Caylee Anthony.
The information was sealed, but Ashton said the judge merely wanted the documents kept from the public without limiting the attorneys ability to talk about it.
