"Toddler Jane" ALEXANDER - 3 yo - Crown Point IN

CROWN POINT | When police and paramedics arrived in late October at a Gary residence, they found a 3-year-old girl with bruises and scratches on her upper body, a bruise on the inside of her left thigh and a cut on the bridge of her nose.

Police were told the child one day before had complained of pain to her legs and vaginal area, according to a probable cause affidavit filed Wednesday in Lake Superior Court and made public Friday.

Taken to a Gary hospital from the residence in the 1000 block of West 22nd Avenue, the child was found to have suffered a fractured tibia, injuries to her vaginal area and old scars all over her body.

The eight-page affidavit subsequently details allegations of repeated physical abuse and molestation over a period between Dec. 1, 2010, and Oct. 26.

Charged with two counts of battery and three counts of neglect of a dependent is the child's 20-year-old mother, Alexis Alexander.

According to the affidavit, multiple witnesses told police of incidents in which Alexander is alleged to have grabbed the child by the hair, choked her, dragged her by the wrist with the child's knees on the ground, whipped her with paint sticks and given her black eyes.

Alexander is alleged not to have taken the child to a doctor since the girl was 3 months old and not taken the girl to a hospital for treatment for her injuries out of fear the child would be taken from her.

The affidavit states reports from the Indiana Department of Child Services indicate a medical examination found the child to have old scars and marks all over her body in addition to the injuries for which police were called Oct. 26. The medical examination also found bruising and abrasions to her face, neck and ears with a hematoma behind the right ear, welts on her upper inner thighs and bruising to her vaginal area.

Alexander is alleged to have told varying stories about how the child suffered these injuries, such as the child having fallen down the stairs or someone else being responsible, such as her ex-boyfriend or the woman with whom she is claimed to be in a relationship.

No child molestation charges currently are pending, according to prosecutors
