- Union County deputies say a man has been charged with homicide by child abuse after the 9-month-old girl he was babysitting died from injuries suffered in his care.
Investigators said the girl was taken to the hospital last week with bruises on her face and died Friday from a fractured skull.
Authorities say 24-year-old Lashawn Brannon told the baby's mother she fell out of her bed, but deputies think she was intentionally abused.
Investigators say Brannon has a prior conviction on a child neglect charge.
Brannon is being held in the Union County jail awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

BOND DENIED -- Bond was denied Tuesday for a Union man accused of killing an infant that had been placed in his care.
Judge Lee Alford said Lashawn Brannon must remain in the Union County Jail for now, but told his court-appointed lawyer, Union County Public Defender Eric Delaney, that the issue of bond could be revisited later. Alford also gave 16th Circuit Solicitor Kevin Brackett 90 days to set a trial date for Brannon.
During the hearing Tuesday, Brackett said Brannon told law officers 9-month old Talayna Renwick was accidentally injured while he was caring for her in December of 2011. Brackett said Brannon initially said the baby fell but later changed his story to say he had dropped her. Brannon, 24, of 254 Mt. Joy Church Road, Jonesville, was charged by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with homicide by child abuse on Dec. 16 after Alayna died in Greenville Memorial Hospital.
