Fayetteville, N.C. — Authorities in Cumberland County were searching early Tuesday for a man who is wanted in connection with the death of his girlfriend and the kidnapping of their 2-year-old child.



According to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, Alexander Velaya, 33, shot his girlfriend, 22-year-old Marianna Latisha Reyes, of 2227 Waco Drive, just after midnight before stealing a car and taking his daughter, 2-year-old Juliana Reyes.

Authorities say Velaya, a Salvadoran national, and Reyes could be in a burgundy Toyota, but weren't sure which direction they could be traveling.

Cumberland County authorities said the North Carolina Center for Missing Persons is working to put out an Amber Alert for Juliana.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office issued an Amber Alert Tuesday morning for Juliana Laticia Reyes.

According
to a news release from the North Carolina Department of Crime Control
and Public Safety, Reyes is a 1-year-old Hispanic female,
approximately 2 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 30 pounds. She has
brown hair, and brown eyes.

Deputies identify the suspect in the case as 23-year-old Alex Zelaya. Zelaya is described as a Hispanic male, with brown hair.

According to WNCN-TV in Raleigh, it is believed that Velaya shot and
killed the child's mother, 22-year-old Marianna Reyes, sometime Tuesday
morning in Fayetteville. Her body was found in the roadway near her home
on Waco Road.

He is believed to be driving a burgandy Subaru or Toyota.

RALEIGH, NC -- A man wanted for abducting his one-year-old daughter in North Carolina may be in Virginia, police said.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says Juliana Katicia Reyes was
taken by Alex Zelaya, 23 and he may be driving a stolen green Toyota
with a Virginia license plate.

Media reports in NC report Velaya is a suspect in the murder of his
girlfriend, the child's mother, 22-year-old Marianna Reyes, whose body
was found in the road near her home in Fayetteville early Tuesday
morning.

The little girl is about 2'8" tall and weighs about 30 pounds.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP/WAVY) - A little girl has been found safe in Newport News, but police are still looking for her father, who they suspect of killing her mother in North Carolina.

Newport News police say the abducted 1-year-old was found in front of the Grandstand's Grill in Newport News Tuesday at 7:23 a.m.

The missing child, Juliana Laticia Reyes, was found by a delivery driver in front of the Bayberry Shopping Center, located in the 900 block of Jefferson Avenue, according to Newport News Police spokesperson Holly McPherson.

Police said she was found wearing a Disney character Jasmine t-shirt, dirty diaper, no shoes, and no socks. Blood hounds were used to see if the suspect's scent could be found in the area, since the area is populated with hotels.

Earlier Tuesday morning, the body of 22-year-old Marianna Reyes was found outside her Fayetteville home. Reyes had been shot multiple times, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives believe she was shot by 23-year-old Alex Zelaya with whom she had a daughter.

Investigators say Zelaya took the little girl with him in a stolen Toyota or Subaru.

There is no word on Zelaya's whereabouts at this time.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says police in Virginia are helping with the investigation.

Suspect in Cumberland County death arrested in Connecticut

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Cumberland County authorities say a man accused of killing his girlfriend and kidnapping their 22-month-old daughter has surrendered to police in Connecticut. Sheriff's office spokeswoman Debbie Tanna says 23-year-old Alexander Zelaya was arrested Thursday morning in the town of West Haven. Tanna says Zelaya drove to a Walmart in town and asked how to find the nearest police station. Investigators say Zelaya shot and killed 22-year-old Marianna Reyes and fled Fayetteville in a stolen vehicle with their daughter, Juliana. He dropped the little girl off at a Food Lion in Newport News, Va. on Wednesday. Juliana is now with her mother's parents. Zelaya is currently being held without bond pending an initial court appearance on charges of first-degree murder. It couldn't be immediately determined if he has a lawyer.
