Bloomington, Ind.
A Bloomington home health care nurse faces a felony battery charge after a Linton family told police the nurse neglected and abused their 6-year-old daughter with cerebral palsy who was in her care.

Susan Johnson, 52, is preliminarily charged with battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class D felony. The young girl’s father told an officer with the Linton Police Department he was concerned Johnson was sleeping during her shift when she was supposed to care for his daughter. The father stated his daughter was prone to seizures and requires constant medical care. Due to his concerns, the father told the officer he installed a hidden camera in his living room to monitor the care Johnson was providing for the child.

The father told police he reviewed the tape and discovered Johnson was not only neglecting his daughter but abusing her as well. He later turned the video over to police for review.

According to the probable cause, an officer reported Johnson was seen, in the video, handling the young girl “in an inappropriate manner.” The officer stated Johnson could be seen throwing the girl into a chair and then tossing her onto the floor. The PC described Johnson throwing the girl back into the chair with no regard for the support of the girl’s neck or head.

Upon further review of the video, police said Johnson was observed undressing the girl and “jerking on her clothes and arm in a manner that does not support her head.” An officer also noted the home nurse shoved the girl’s head into the chair while changing her clothes.

The father also showed police an injury to his daughter’s lip, stating the wound was not there when he left for work.

Johnson was arrested Wednesday in Bloomington and booked in the Greene County Jail. Police said she posted a $4,000 bond Thursday. She is expected to appear in court for an initial hearing on Wednesday
