"Baby Jane" JOHNSON - 4 Months - Austin TX
Austin police have issued a warrant for 18-year-old Akeem Johnson after they say he squeezed his four-month-old daughter and caused multiple fractures in at least seven bones. The baby’s parents brought her to the Dell Children’s Medical Center for a broken ankle on June 11. Doctors discovered more than just a broken ankle, and police have spent four months building their case against Johnson. Police say Johnson squeezed the child because she was constipated. They say it is an extreme case of child abuse.“I was kind of amazed at the reason,” Austin Police Cpl. Marco Hipolito said. “I haven't seen anything quite this extreme.” X-rays revealed multiple fractures to the baby's ankle, legs, and three of her ribs. According to an affidavit, the child's mother told investigators how the baby's father Akeem Johnson injured their 4-month-old daughter.
“The suspect laid the baby on the bed and basically folded the baby's legs up and squeezed down onto the chest,” Cpl. Hipolito said. “He also grabbed the baby's legs and squeezed on the baby's chest, trying to make the baby have a bowel movement.”Police say Johnson injured his daughter again in the same manner a few days later. Austin Diagnostic Clinic pediatrician Beth Nauert often investigates child abuse cases for the Center for Child Protection. She says too often parents abuse their babies because of constant crying that is often triggered by stomach aches or illnesses.“If somebody is tired, and they're frustrated, and they see their baby frustrated, and they've done everything they know to do, then it's very easy to be more forceful if they are frustrated than if they are calm,” Dr. Nauert says. Now police are looking for Johnson. He no longer lives at the East Austin apartment where police say he abused the baby.“Child abuse detectives have issued a warrant for Akeem Johnson,” Cpl Hipolito says. “They do not have a current address on him, so they're putting this information out so hopefully someone will see him and call 911, and we can arrest him on injury to a child.” The mother no longer lives at the apartment either. According to Children’s Protective Services, she voluntarily surrendered the infant to a family member and is allowed only supervised visits with her children until police close their investigation. A CPS spokeswoman confirmed that the mother is voluntarily enrolled in parenting classes. According to the Center for Child Protection, about one third of the children they saw were hurt by their parents or caregivers in 2009. They say if you ever find yourself so frustrated to be on the brink of hurting your child, call 911 and someone will come and help you immediately. For non-emergency parenting advice and support, you can call 311.
