Human remains found near Lewis County
The Barbour County Sheriff's Department is investigating the discovery of what could be human remains.
The remains were reportedly discovered along the Tygart River in the Arden area. Sheriff John Hawkins says that his office has no reason to believe at this time that the remains have any connection to the case of the missing girl in Lewis County.
Around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, a local resident reported to the 911 center in Barbour County that they found what they believed to be a shallow grave with human remains. Deputies supposedly observed sand along the riverbank, with some stacked rocks and a small hole dug by the resident. In that hole, there appeared to be a human leg.
After speaking with the prosecuting attorney, the State Medical Examiner's Office decided to secure the scene and call in an anthropological team from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. to help with the investigation.
"We've had a lot of calls, a lot of questions and concerns, thinking it might be related to a case of a missing child in Lewis County. Based on what we see, based on the size of the grave, based on what we have seen...we have no reason to believe that it has any connection with the missing child in Lewis County," said Barbour County Sheriff John Hawkins.
Operations are expected to resume Wednesday, but if you might have seen any suspicious activity in the area, call the Barbour County Sheriff's Department at 304-457-2352.
