COLUMBIA — An 8-week-old baby was in intensive care Thursday
afternoon, police said, and her father was charged with child abuse and
second-degree assault.

Jonathan Rainey, 18, was arrested Tuesday after his daughter was
admitted to University Hospital, Latisha Stroer, spokeswoman for the
Columbia Police Department, said.

The infant had been shaken at least three times and suffered
bleeding on the brain consistent with blunt-force trauma, according to a
probable cause statement. She also had bruising to her left temple and
behind her ears and injuries to her chest, according to police.

Rainey told police he was the only person with the baby when the
injuries occurred, according to a probable cause statement. He told
police that he placed the infant in the middle of a bed and that he
shook the baby at least three times to wake her up after she rolled off
the bed.

Rainey was in the Boone County Jail on Thursday afternoon with bail set at $30,000.
