"Newborn Jane" OLSEN - 7 Weeks - Sandstone (nr WI border) MN
SANDSTONE, Minn. - A 21-year-old Sandstone, Minn., father is charged
with four felony counts -- two of first-degree assault and two of
malicious punishment of child -- after breaking his 7-week-old
daughter’s arm and leg by grabbing and squeezing them to quiet her so he
could sleep.
William Robert Olsen faces a maximum of 55 years in
prison and $90,000 in fines if sentenced on all four counts. Officials
say he admitting to the abuse.
When the parents brought the baby
girl to Essentia Health Hospital in Sandstone March 22 at 2:10 a.m.,
emergency room staff noticed severe injuries and reported the suspected
child abuse to the Pine County Sheriff's Office.
PCSO
investigators went to Essentia and were told the child had been released
to the family. Officers then learned the girl had been brought to
Gateway Clinic in Moose Lake for a follow-up appointment.
Gateway
Clinic doctors examined the child and determined that the child had a
fractured left humorous and a fractured right femur. The child was
transported to the University of Minnesota Hospital where physicians
performed emergency surgery on the child's leg. Doctors said they the
girl's limbs may be permanently disfigured.
Olsen admitted, while
crying, to various abuse of his daughter to police during a voluntary
statement. He said the child’s arm and leg and were squeezed so hard
they both fractured. The child's injuries were so severe that she
required emergency surgery.
Doctors who examined the child also
determined that she had multiple fractures to various parts of her body
that were in different stages of healing. Some injuries appeared to be
approximately a month old, others appeared to be a week to two weeks
old and there were recent injuries as well.
Doctors confirmed up
to 21 fractures and 5 likely fractures that were found in seven ribs,
the left clavicle, left humerus, left femur, left tibia, left
metatarsal, right tibia and fibula as well as the skull.
Olsen is in custody at the Pine County Jail. His bail was set at $150,000 without conditions and $30,000 with conditions.
