"Toddler Jane Doe" - 2 yo/ Accused: Irma Mustamu and Ken Chevailer - Fort Lauderdale FL
A man and wife are charged with child neglect after Fort Lauderdale police found them caring for a child with a burned and disfigured hand, missing one finger and with two more described as “partial.”
Irma Mustamu, 22, and Kenneth Chavelier, 29, were both charged with one count of child neglect for not getting the child medical attention. Both were in Broward County jails Wednesday night, each held on $50,000 bond.
The child, who turns 2 this month, was with the Department of Children & Families.
Detectives continue to investigate, but first they need to uncover exactly where and when the horrific injury happened.
“I just can’t begin to imagine the pain this child felt,” police spokesman Detective Travis Mandell said, later adding “This was abuse, no ifs and or buts.”
The couple was found Tuesday with the child at the Crossland Economy Studios near Northwest 31st Street and Commercial Boulevard.
Officers went there along with a child protective investigator after getting a call reporting children were being tortured, according arrest affidavits. They found the child, with a right hand wrapped in cloth.
When the cloth was removed, they saw the damage to the right hand.
Mustamu told police that the child was “burned by a hot soup that spilled on her hand” on Aug. 6, 2010, in Maryland. They didn’t get treatment and instead she “looked up how to treat for burns from the Internet,” the affidavit said.
But the story didn’t match what officers uncovered. They got medical records from Maryland that showed the child saw a pediatrician on Oct. 27, 2010, and the doctor noted no physical injuries, the affidavit said. A local doctor saw the child Tuesday and confirmed the injuries were due to abuse, police said.
A spokesman for the Maryland Department of Human Resources said he couldn’t release any information about whether the couple had a history with child welfare in that state.
On Wednesday, Mandell said police still don’t know what caused the burns and when and where the child’s hand was hurt. He asked anyone who had any information that might help police place the time and location of the crime to call them.
“This is too grotesque of a crime for someone to not know where it happened,” Mandell said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Fort Lauderdale Detective Lorette Innocent-Doles at 954-828-5137.

I wonder if this was even their child as the article dosn't indicate. These two are idiots and monsters to let that poor baby suffer. They know what happened to him/her and I hope are severly punished. How would they like to go around with their fingers cut off and their hand burned. Stupid POS idiots.
