Re: JASMINE WALKER - 12 YO - Kalispell MT
You may remember that an Amber Alert was issued for a 12-year-old Kalispell girl Tuesday. The good news is Jasmine Walker was found yesterday afternoon south of Las Vegas – but authorities believe online predators are to blame for convincing her to leave home.
Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry says it appears Jasmine Walker developed an online friendship with a 28- year-old California man who traveled to Montana to pick her up.
Now, the 28 –year-old, Edgard Le and 37-year-old Dennis Nelson face custodial interference charges and authorities say when it comes to online predators, parents and kids need to take steps to protect themselves.
Flathead County authorities say an investigation could lead to other charges in the case involving 12- year-old Jasmine Walker and two adult men.
Great Falls Police say depending on the circumstances, the two men could face aggravated kidnapping, solicitation of a minor and possibly sexual assault cases.
Sergeant Bryan Slavik with GFPD says given the circumstances of Jasmine's Amber Alert, parents and kids need to realize that there are sexual predators out there that use the internet to prey on minors.
Sergeant Slavik says parents need to monitor everything, keep computers and electronic devices in sight at all times and to never take what's going on at face value. He suggests monitoring your child's history to find out exactly where they've been and who they're communicating with.
“There’s no such thing as invasion of privacy with a minor if you’re a parent or guardian. You have a right to look at everything they’ve done. We understand that children, especially young adults, find that to be invasive and they want their privacy but you as a parent have an obligation to do that to make sure that they are safe. And in the particular case in Kalispell, I don’t think anyone would argue that a 12-year-old has the ability to make a decision on whether she should be running off with a 28-year-old man and going out of state. It’s very dangerous, she’s lucky to be alive,” says Sgt. Slavik. He adds that statistically speaking, if you spend any amount of time online, at some point in time you will be propositioned by a sexual predator because the numbers are just that great.
Authorities say parents and kids need to realize that anything online can be viewed by anyone, anywhere.

Suspects in Montana Amber Alert case make court appearance
Posted: Mar 1, 2012 10:37 AM
KALISPELL- The two men arrested by authorities after taking off to
California with a 12 year old Evergreen girl made their initial
appearances in Flathead Justice Court.
Edgard "Eddie" Le, 28, and Dennis Nelson, 37, both of California,
appeared before Judge Mark Sullivan on Monday on one count each of
felony custodial interference.
Both men are facing these charges after 12 year old Jasmine Walker
was taken from her home in Evergreen, just outside of Kalispell.
The pair were arrested in California after a nation-wide Amber Alert was issued by the Flathead County Sheriff's Office.
Both men were picked up in California by Flathead Sheriff's detectives and transported back to Kalispell to face charges.
The maximum sentence for custodial interference is 10 years in prison.
Their next court appearance is scheduled for March 5th.
(February 16, 2012) Two California men are
now in custody, accused of picking up Flathead Valley 12 year old
Jasmine Walker and triggering a nationwide Amber Alert.
Jasmine is safe and will be returning to Montana soon, according to her mother April Hindahl.
Edgard Le, 27, and Dennis Nelson, 37, are facing custodial
interference charges in Flathead County, according to Flathead County
Sheriff Chuck Curry.
Officials believe Jasmine developed an online friendship with Le and that the two men drove to Montana on Monday to pick her up.
A nation-wide Amber Alert was issued just after noon on Tuesday.
KVVU in Las Vegas says that the Nevada Highway Patrol reports that
they passed through Las Vegas on I-15, and police stopped and arrested
the men at around 5 p.m. about 30 miles into California.
Walker was said to be OK; both men were taken into custody.
Sheriff Curry says he's happy this led to a positive outcome.
He said, "These cases don't always end well and I think we're all
aware of horror stories of other cases from other countries where
they've ended poorly. We were on top of this. We worked very well with
the FBI and quite a few other local law enforcement agencies between
here and California, so we're pleased that we were able to bring this to
the conclusion that we were, get the little girl back."
Jasmine's mother April Hindahl, pictured above, says she's elated her daughter is safe and on her way home.
Hindahl said she was scared, and added, "Who do I call? To try and
find her after I called 911. Just trying to find her, I didn't know if I
needed to look around, we looked out back, you know....just....where is
she? How did this happen?"
Jasmine's father immediately flew to California to pick her up.
Her mother told us that Jasmine did not have access to a computer at home, nor did she have her own cell phone.
