An 8-year-old Palatine boy was reported missing after a trip to the
grocery store with his mother’s boyfriend, and police have issued an
Amber Alert.

The boy, Eriberto Perez, was last seen around 8:30
p.m. Thursday with 30-year-old William Cruz. The boy’s mother last spoke
with Cruz around 9:20 p.m. that day.

She has not been able to contact Cruz since, police said.

The Illinois State Police activated an Amber Alert Friday for an
8-year-old who they said was abducted from Palatine, Ill.

Eriberto Perez was taken from an apartment Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
by William Cruz, according to police.

Perez is a white male, 4 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 100
pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He is wearing a gray hooded
sweatshirt, a red shirt with black sleeves and blue jeans.

Cruz is a 30-year-old white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall,
weighing 180 pounds, with black hair in a crew cut and brown eyes.
He is wearing a gray and white hooded sweatshirt, black jeans and
white Nike gym shoes and has a tattoo on his right wrist and left
arm, according to police.

The vehicle is a silver 2001 Chrysler four-door, according to
police, with Illinois license plate P530118. Anyone with
information is asked to call 911 and say they have an Amber Alert
report.

UPDATE: Eriberto Perez has been found unharmed on Chicago's west side.
Palatine Police Department. Sgt. David Daigle says William Cruz is in
custody and they will be seeking charges against him.

Palatine Man Charged With Kidnapping Girlfriend’s Son in Amber Alert Case

Palatine, Ill. - A Palatine man has been charged with kidnapping his girlfriend’s 8-year-old son Thursday night, prompting an Amber Alert before he and the boy were found the next day in Chicago.

William Cruz, of the 400 block of West Palatine Road in Palatine, has been charged with one count of aggravated kidnapping, according to a release from the Palatine Police Department.

The boy’s mother called police about 10:50 p.m. Thursday night after Cruz, 30, and her her son had not returned hours after going grocery shopping nearby, the release said.

Although Cruz is not Perez’s biological father, the boy’s mother allowed him to take the boy along about 8:30 p.m. with the understanding he’d be back shortly.

Before calling police, Perez’s mother called Cruz on his cell phone at 9:20 p.m. and Cruz said they were going to a relative’s home in Chicago. She told Cruz to bring the boy home, but he did not and turned off his cell phone, the release said.

After that, Cruz could not be reached until police spotted his vehicle, described in the Amber alert, and arrested him about 9:30 p.m. Friday near Madison Street and Springfield Avenue in Chicago.

Court information was not immediately available.
