Newborn RYAN BRENNAN - 5 Weeks (10/2010) - Norfolk/ Virginia Beach VA
Kevin Custer pleaded guilty today to second degree murder and child abuse. He was accused of killing a baby.
Custer was arrested in October and was accused of murdering his girlfriend's six-week-old baby, Ryan Brennan.
Police say he shook the baby, put a pillow over his head and threw the baby against a head board when he would not stop crying.
Custer will serve 20 years in prison for the crime.

A Virginia Beach man is charged with murdering a baby. Kevin Michael Custer was watching over his girlfriend's six-week old son this weekend. Sunday morning, he awoke
early to find Ryan Brennan unresponsive. The baby died in the hospital.
Police have charged him with second-degree murder in the child's death.
Custer would bring the child to his grandparent's house regularly. They
say he was good and caring to the baby.
"No way, no way, I mean he idolized that kid," his grandfather, John Custer said.
Police say Custer and the victim's mother were acquaintances,
but family says the two had been dating on and off for three years.
For the baby's godmother, Angela Browning, Ryan's life was supposed to be the fresh start that the family needed.
"I basically got this place so her and the baby would have a nice place
over their heads. She was going to watch over my kids and try to give
her a chance to being a mother. She was definitely that," Browning says.
Police say Custer was taking care of the baby boy at his home, but his
grandparents say he lived with them and that he didn't hurt the child.
John says, "He's not been born that way. He's not been raised that way. I
know definitely he wouldn't do something like that in fact I'd stake my
own life on it."
Police won't confirm that Kevin Michael was the boy's father, but five
weeks ago on his Facebook page, he wrote that he was taking a paternity
test.
He wrote with great delight about becoming a father, saying last month,
"Another awesome day with lil man! So not looking forward to giving him
back to his Mom."
Browning says, "It wasn't even his kid but he was willing to take care of him. He already grew attached to him."
His family says he hoped the newfound responsibility would settle him down.
John says, "I think they're making a mountain out of a mole hill to be truthful with you. He wouldn't do something like that."
Custer was arrested on Tuesday and faces two felonies. It was then that
the family got more details on the suspicious death of young Ryan.
John says, "Her family got the call that Kevin confessed to shaking and
throwing the baby because it wouldn't stop crying. If he couldn't hancle
the baby why didn't he just call us? We would have come and get it."
Custer's bond hearing is tomorrow in Virginia Beach.

I wonder what the grandparents have to say now since he plead guilty. I don't think 20 years is enough for murdering an infant. He should have gotten life as the baby is dead and will have no life.

Babyj and Flash, I agree with you both.
20 years is proof that the judge feels like many abusers, a baby's life is not worth as much as an adult's. I think a baby's life is is juist as precious.

I agree with that especially a worthless POS baby killer. They really deserve to suffer and be punished the way they hurt the child, so I think they would be let off easy by getting life in prison.
