Search intensifies for missing American in Panama

Yvonne Baldelli, an American woman settlinig into life in Panama, suddenly went missing five months ago. Her family has made several trips to Panama to help with the search.

PANAMA CITY, Panama -- The family of an American woman is searching for any clues to her disappearance from Bocas del Toro islands five months ago.

Yvonne Baldelli, then age 41, arrived on the islands off Panama’s Caribbean coast from Laguna Niguel, California in September. She and her boyfriend, Brian Brimager, began settling into island life, renting a waterfront apartment in Casa del Sapo on Carenero Island. Brimager, a former U.S. marine, played music in the local bars, and by all accounts, Baldelli was loving life.

Her mother last heard from her in an email in late November. Until then, she had written regularly, sending photos and telling her family how happy she was in her island paradise.

In early December, Brimager told acquaintances that Baldelli had left him and that he was returning to Southern California, describing himself as “another local sad story.” According to his Facebook page at the time, he left Bocas del Toro on December 10, passed through Costa Rica and laid over in Atlanta on December 12.

When Baldelli’s family did not hear from her about a January family reunion, they flew to Panama in search of what happened to her. They have been working with local authorities and the U.S. Embassy to find evidence. Neither has any record of Baldelli leaving the country.

“We are looking for any leads from the local community or anyone who has traveled through Bocas del Toro who may have met Yvonne or has any information,” a family source said. They say that they are not making any assumptions at this time.

By December, rumors about her disappearance were already travelling what local residents call the “coconut telegraph.” Had Baldelli left the country? Was her body found? In January, local police would not confirm whether her disappearance had even been reported.

Baldelli is not the first American woman to go missing from Bocas del Toro in recent years. In July 2010, authorities unearthed the body of Cheryl Lynn Hughes, a St. Louis native who had been missing for four months. The discovery shook the usually fun-loving island community and led to the capture of U.S. fugitive William “Wild Bill” Dathan Holbert, who admitted to killing five Bocas del Toro residents in a murder-for-property spree. Hughes had owned the Casa del Sapo property apartments where Baldelli and Brimager were staying.

Baldelli’s family is also focusing on finding a Tiffany & Co. Circle Lariat necklace that she always wore and her King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, GeorgiaMae. They have created the Find Yvonne Baldelli Facebook page to gather any leads and organized a walking search of Carenero Island for Wednesday. .

“Everyone who knows Yvonne loves her, and all the family wants is to bring her home,” James Faust, Baldelli’s father, said in a statement.

On Tuesday, Panama’s Directorate of Judicial Investigation announced a $3,000 reward for information leading to the positive identification of Baldelli’s whereabouts.

Yvonne Baldelli Missing: FBI looking for California woman who vanished in Panama

By Crimesider Staff

(CBS) - Officials in Panama say they have a person of interest in the case of missing California woman Yvonne Baldelli, who vanished five months ago, "CBS This Morning" reports.

On Tuesday, a Panamanian official said the FBI is investigating Baldelli's boyfriend, Brian Brimager, in connection to the disappearance.

Baldelli, 41, who was recently divorced and had been laid off from her job at Proctor and Gamble, reportedly moved to Panama in September with Brimager in search of a fresh start.

She hasn't been seen or heard from since last November. Everything had appeared fine, until Baldelli abruptly stopped contacting her family. Phone calls went unanswered and she missed a family reunion.

James Faust, Baldelli's father, told CBS News, "What we want is to bring Yvonne home and show that she's loved and cared about."

Although Brimager claimed Baldelli went to Costa Rica with another man, Baldelli's passport shows she never left Panama. Within weeks of her disappearance, Brimager returned to the U.S., got engaged, and married another woman.

Since Baldelli's disappearance, her family has been searching the island where she lived for any traces of her. They have found nothing so far.

The family has set up a Facebook page to solicit volunteers for their search efforts. Police now say they believe Baldelli and Brimager had a violent relationship, and won't rule out a crime of passion. The FBI is reportedly sending divers to search the waters around the island on Wednesday.

DANA POINT – The family and friends of an Orange County woman missing in Panama are holding a march and candlelight vigil Saturday evening at Salt Creek Beach Park.

In September, Yvonne Baldelli, 42, moved with her boyfriend Brian Brimager, 36, to Carenero Island, one of a group of islands that make up the archipelago province of Bocas del Toro on Panama's Caribbean coast.

Panamanian authorities have reclassified the case of Yvonne Baldelli as a homicide. Baldelli, 42, went missing on Nov. 26 along with her two dogs, according to her family.

Baldelli had recently been laid off from her job with Sebastian International and Brimager's Marine Corps service was coming to an end. The two wanted to live together on the beach, said Lauren Beyer, Baldelli's niece, something that is cheaper to do in Panama than in Orange County.

The couple rented an apartment, and Brimager played the guitar in bars for tips, according to news reports. Baldelli, according to her family, has a passion for sewing and an eye for fashion and hoped to sell her work on local beaches. Baldelli also acted as a manager of sorts for Brimager, getting him gigs at local spots, Beyer said.

Witnesses at the place where Baldelli and Brimager were staying, known locally as Casa del Sapo, reported the couple had a violent relationship and frequently fought, according to Alexis Muñoz, director of the Panama Department of Judicial Investigation.

Beyer said her aunt frequently called or emailed family members. Her last correspondence came in late November, Beyer said. She was last seen on Carenero Island on Nov. 26.

According to news reports, Brimager told acquaintances Baldelli had gone to Costa Rica with another man, and he planned to return to Southern California. He was back in the United States by mid-December. There is no record of Baldelli leaving Panama, according to news reports.

Baldelli's family has been in Panama searching for her, and Panamanian and U.S. authorities have conducted multiple searches of the island. In the months since the search began, the FBI has joined the investigation, assisting Panamanian authorities in looking for trace evidence at the home where Baldelli and Brimager stayed.

Within a few days of returning to the United States, Brimager became engaged to and then married another woman, according to news reports.

An Amazon.com wedding registry entry for a Kristin M. Werkhoven and Brian Brimager states the two met in Washington, D.C., at a karaoke bar in 2004 and had a daughter in 2010. Here is an excerpt from the entry, which has since been deleted:

"Brian got out of the Marine Corps in November 2011 and went on a vacation to Panama to detox from the Marine Corps. Now Brian is a professional father during the day and a professional student at night. We were engaged on 15 December and on 31 December we had a civil ceremony to legalize our marriage. We look forward to seeing many of you at our wedding on the 4th of July in Cabo San Lucas!"

Panamanian police have named Brimager a person of interest in the case, and in mid-May declared it a homicide investigation.

Saturday's vigil and march is to increase awareness about Baldelli's disappearance, Beyer said. Salt Creek was selected because it was a cherished place for Baldelli, she said.

"The investigators think that she's gone," Beyer said. "And I don't think that they believe it was an accident. We want to find out what happened to her. We want to find out where she is. ... We want to bring her home."

(CBS/AP) PANAMA CITY, Panama - Panamanian police named an American
ex-Marine as a person of interest Sunday in the disappearance of Yvonne
Baldelli. She is the 42-year-old California woman who vanished almost
five months ago near the Costa Rica border.
Pictures: Calif. woman vanishes in Panama
Police
in Panama and the United States haven't identified Brian Brimager as a
suspect in the case, but Panama national police official Alexis Munoz
said Sunday that Brimager, who was reportedly dating Baldelli, has
raised investigators' interest.
Later in the day,
Baldelli's mother, Lillian Faust, who is in Panama for the
investigation, said she thinks her daughter is dead and begged for
Brimager to tell what he knows about what happened to her.
"My
husband, I, the family know that something happened to her. Some people
want to say that she's out there somewhere, but everyone in the family
knows that's not possible," Faust said.
"We did not want to accept it for a long time but we have accepted it," she added.
Panama
police said Brimager left Panama for Costa Rica and the United States
some 10 days after last being seen with Baldelli in November on the
Bocas del Toro islands. Baldelli's family reported her missing in
January.
Munoz said witnesses at the hotel where the couple
stayed reported they had a "violent" relationship and frequently fought
and argued. Panamanian officials said Brimager was between the ages of
35 and 40 and had brought Baldelli to the islands.
On Thursday, FBI and Panamanian forensic investigators visited the hotel.
The mother said she had never met Brimager, who she thinks is from Southern California.
Faust
said authorities had not told them that Brimager is suspected of
anything. "I do not know, but if he knows something I would love for him
to speak," she said.
Baldelli's sister, Michelle Faust, told The Associated Press on
Wednesday that the missing woman had gone to Panama in September to
design and produce clothing to sell on the islands' beaches.
She
said the family had talked with the boyfriend after he returned to the
U.S. but declined to give any details of what was said.
Munoz said Brimager had worked while in Panama as a performer in bars playing guitar and singing for tips.
