Father shot four-year-old son in the head before turning gun on himself in murder-suicide
Friday, May 11th, 2012.
The death of a father and his four-year-old son who were found
fatally shot in their Denver home on Tuesday has been deemed a
murder-suicide, according to police.
Police said Kevin Bristol killed his son and then committed suicide, according to the Denver Post.
The 30-year-old was initially left in critical condition but
died at a hospital on Wednesday, while the four-year-old died soon after
the shooting.
Both died of single gunshot wounds to the head, police said.
Investigators recovered two guns from the home, a handgun, and a .22-caliber rifle, which was used in the shooting.
The case remains an ‘open investigation’ but police said the family had problems.
‘The family was having relationship issues,’ Officer Matt Barnes, a Thornton police spokesman, told the newspaper.
Police were notified of the shooting by Mr Bristol’s wife who heard some noise in their home after midnight on Monday night.
She arose from her bed to find her husband and son shot in a back room of the house.
‘Something woke her up, not sure what that was,’ police officer
Matt Barnes said of Mr Bristol’s wife, who has not been identified.
‘She checked on her husband and child and they were suffering from gunshot wounds.’
Police found weapons inside the home, but at the time did not say whose they were.
Mr Bristol and his wife had been living in the rented home for
several years, and he had been working at a local construction company
for six or seven years prior to the shooting.
His boss told 9News that
Mr Bristol was a good employee, and neighbors said that they frequently
saw him playing with his son in the street or taking him for rides on
his motorcycle.
At the time, police did not release any information about
potential suspects and said that they were not actively looking for any
but gave no explanation as to why.
‘This is a homicide investigation. Until we determine actually
what took place, we’ll treat it as a homicide and see where that
investigation leads us,’ Mr Barnes said.
‘We don’t believe that the public’s in danger. We believe this
is an isolated incident. We’re not particularly searching for suspects
at this time.’
