  A Winter Haven mother was arrested after an autopsy found that her 3-week old son died last month after being shaken or thrown
forcefully onto a bed.

Jessica Michelle Lentz, 32, of 523 Cypress Circle, was arrested Thursday on a charge of negligent homicide after telling Polk County deputies she took strong prescription medication the night of May 12, when her son died.

Her abuse of prescription medication "created a hazardous environment" for the child and may have played a part in the baby's death, deputies said.

Initially, Lentz said she had gotten up to feed the baby, put him down and went back to sleep, only to awaken four hours later to find him not breathing.

Lentz's husband, Jeffrey, was asleep at the time and never woke up, deputies said.

An autopsy concluded the boy died from internal hemorrhaging consistent with either being shaken of violently thrown onto a soft surface, such as a bed.

Jessica Lentz is in the Polk County Jail, and bail had not been set as of this morning.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A 32-year-old woman is accused of causing the death of her three-week-old son.

According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office affidavit, Winter Haven resident Jessica Michelle Lentz lived with her husband, father, and children at a home located in the 520 block of Cipres Circle.

The morning of May 12, Lentz called 911 when her baby - Jeffrey D. Lentz, Jr. was unresponsive.

Jessica Lentz reportedly gave investigators varying accounts about what happened, and also claimed the baby suffered from a breathing condition.

Efforts to resuscitate the baby were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy revealed Lentz, Jr. died from internal trauma consistent with someone forcibly shaking him and/or dropping or throwing him onto a soft surface - such as a bed.

Further interviews with detectives concluded that Jessica Lentz was abusing prescription medication at the time of her son's death.

She was arrested on Thursday, charged with aggravated manslaughter, and booked into the Polk County Jail.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The mother of a 3-week-old Winter Haven boy who died in 2012 of head trauma has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

A judge sentenced Jessica Lentz, 34, after she pleaded no contest to aggravated child neglect and other charges.

Officials said the boy, Jeffery Lentz Jr., likely suffered his injuries from being shaken, dropped or thrown.

Lentz told investigators multiple stories about how the injuries occurred, but police said she eventually admitted to falling asleep after taking prescription drugs.

Police said they were not sure if Lentz was intentionally misleading them with her stories or did not remember what happened because of the drugs.

According to a report, Lentz also has a daughter, who was 2 years old at the time of her brother's death.
