Hartford Mayor Asks For Public's Help In Finding Missing Teen
HARTFORD —
One night, 16-year-old Cristina Ortiz was on her computer, unable to sleep, her family said.
The next day, she was gone.
That was May 23. On Wednesday, Mayor Pedro E. Segarra took the unusual step of making a personal plea for the public's help in finding the missing teen.
In a press conference at city hall, Segarra, with
representatives of the police department and Ortiz's family nearby,
asked anyone who knows where Ortiz is to call the police. The family is
distraught, he said, and "we have no idea of her whereabouts."Ortiz
apparently left her city home on her own instead of going to school
that day at the Greater Hartford Academy for Math and Science, city
officials and family members said. She was having difficulty sleeping
the night before and was on the computer, the mayor said, but "there
doesn't appear to be solid evidence of an abduction."
Pedro Baez, Ortiz's stepfather, talked to the teen-ager directly: "We love you. We miss you. We want you to come home," he said.
"Whatever happened, forget about it. We want you to come home."
Segarra also addressed the girl, saying if there's any reason she doesn't feel
comfortable coming to her neighborhood, "you can come to the mayor's office."
There have been two "Silver Alerts" notifying police and
media statewide of her disappearance, said Sgt. William Mooney of the
Juvenile Investigative Division. He attended the press conference along
with interim Chief James C. Rovella, and detectives Ivette Perez and
Nicole Mordasiewicz, also of the child investigations unit.
Also at the press conference were Ortiz's mother, Sonia Rodriguez, and her brothers, Victor Ortiz, 15, and Omaniel Ortiz, 13.
Angel Arce, whose father, Angel Arce Torres, died after a highly-publicized
hit-and-run on Park Street in 2008 that was caught on camera, attended
to support the family, he said. The Ortiz family had asked the mayor for assistance, he said.
"They're trying to get as much help as they can," Arce said.
As for Victor Ortiz, it has been difficult not knowing where his sister is, the younger teen said.
"We feel bad about it," he said.
Ortiz is described as 5-foot-1 and 105 pounds. She has brown hair and brown
eyes. She is known to wear blue jeans or a shirt with a black or gray
top. She also wears eyeglasses, police said.
Anyone with any information that might help police find her is asked to call Det. Ivys
Arroyo of the Juvenile Investigative Division, 860-757-4236 or the
routine line at the police department, 860-757-4000.

Plea made for missing girl's safe return
06/20/1212
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- It's been nearly a month since a Hartford teen
disappeared. Wednesday Hartford's Mayor and Interim Police Chief made a
public plea for her safe return.
News 8 is told 16-year-old
Cristina Ortiz' mother and step-father asked the Mayor to hold a news
conference to get her name and face out there. They too wanted to tell
her they miss her.
Cristina's parents said the last time they saw
her and spoke with her was at their home. She was up late on the
computer and told her step-father she couldn't sleep. They expected her
to wake up and go to school the next morning, May 23rd, but she never
did.
News 8 asked them if any kids at her school, Greater
Hartford Academy of Math and Sciences, were giving her trouble. They
said no. They described her as a happy girl who they miss seeing
everyday.
Police say they have interviewed students and staff at
the school and there is little information as to why she would leave or
where she would be.
"There doesn't seem to be solid evidence of
abduction," said Mayor Pedro Segarra, "but of course, not being familiar
with the reasons, we don't want to rule out anything at this point."
"Please
give us a call," said Cristina's step-father Pedro Baez. "We love you
and miss you and want you to come home. Whatever happened, forget about
it. We just want you home."
Anyone with information is asked to call the Hartford Police Department.
