A juvenile girl who escaped Department of Human Services custody is
considered missing Friday, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The girl allegedly jumped out of a vehicle about 2 p.m. Thursday at the
McDonald’s restaurant on the Muskogee Turnpike north of Muskogee.

Emergency call logs from Muskogee 911 dispatch show officers said they
located a missing girl, Samantha Shaw, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. At 1:45
p.m., call logs state a DHS worker said the girl escaped custody.

Shaw, 16, was listed with the National Center for Missing and Exploited
Children on April 9 as missing. When she was located, her name was
removed from the list.

DHS spokesman Mark Beutler said because of laws regarding juvenile
identification, DHS couldn’t confirm or deny if a specific juvenile was
in their custody.

Muskogee County Sheriff’s deputies, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers
and Muskogee Police Department officers were involved in a search for
the girl Thursday, though OHP had jurisdiction because the girl escaped
on the highway.

On Friday, an OHP spokesman said they were “no longer actively looking
for the girl,” were filing a runaway report on her, and were placing her
information into the National Crime Information Center database as a
missing person.

Muskogee County Sheriff’s Deputy Kent Barber said the girl had been
found in Muskogee early Thursday at an address on 17th Street. After the
girl escaped custody, Muskogee dispatch sent an officer and a DHS
employee to the house on 17th Street, but the girl didn’t return to that
address, the logs state.

Barber was northbound on U.S. 69 when he heard the report of the girl escaping DHS custody.

“Apparently, she told the worker she needed to go to the bathroom and
then ran when they pulled over at the McDonald’s,” Barber said. “The
worker tried to catch up with her, but the girl was able to get a ride
before she could catch up.”

Barber said the DHS employee said it appeared the girl entered a white
van towing a yellow trailer. Barber said while north on U.S. 69, he
noticed a southbound white van with a yellow trim.

“I’m guessing that was the van she mentioned,” Barber said. “Timewise,
it had to be, because there was only about a three-minute time lapse,
and she said she didn’t get a real good look at the van.”

Barber and OHP troopers searched the area for the van after losing sight of it.

“We were real worried that maybe whoever picked her up wasn’t a good
person,” Barber said. “So we were checking dirt roads and things to make
sure someone didn’t pick her up and take her out of sight.”
