MOUNT PLEASANT - Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police now are calling Thursday
night’s disappearance of a 4-year-old boy in the Isabella Reservation
near Mount Pleasant, Mich., “suspicious” and the FBI has joined the
investigation.A statement released early Saturday morning said investigators have a
“person of interest” in mind, but did not identity that person. It gave
no indication whether police were talking to the person of interest.
Felony crimes involving Native Americans committed on Indian
reservations fall under federal jurisdiction. The missing by, Carnell
Chamberlain, 4, is a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
“Their investigation moves forward from this point,” said the statement from Tribal spokesman Frank Cloutier.
Carnell was supposed to be with his family at their Tomah Road home
east of Mount Pleasant Thursday evening when his mother discovered she
couldn’t find him, Cloutier said.
“They started to look,” Cloutier said. “There was a bit of a panic.”
The family called Tribal Dispatch shortly after 10 p.m., and the search was on.
Search efforts, led by bloodhounds and volunteer searchers, were
concentrated in an area bordered by Remus, Shepherd, Leaton and Tomah roads.
An Aeromed helicopter searched the area in the early morning hours as
groups of volunteers hit the streets, woods and fields calling the boy’s name.
After dawn Friday, volunteers were spaced every few hundred yards and a
command center was set up on Tomah Road near the Tribal campground as
officials continued to search a one-square-mile area of the Isabella
Indian Reservation.

MT. PLEASANT -- The FBI has joined the investigation into the
disappearance of a 4-year-old boy, as searchers focused Saturday on a
densely wooded area on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian reservation.
Authorities
said they've identified an unnamed person of interest in the search for
Carnell Chamberlain, who was reported missing Thursday night. The Mt.
Pleasant Morning Sun reported police were focusing on the boyfriend of
Carnell's mother.
"The mother has been fully cooperative in this
developing investigation," Frank Cloutier, a spokesman for the Saginaw
Chippewa Indian Tribe, said in a statement Saturday. "The boyfriend,
however, has not fully cooperated in the investigation thus far."
On
Saturday evening, the boy's mother, 21-year-old Jaimee Chamberlain,
told the Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun she had just gotten home from her job
at Isabella's restaurant at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort on
Thursday when she learned her son was missing. She looked around her
yard, and "knew something happened" when he wasn't near the house.
"My
son's not a wanderer," she told the Morning Sun. "I always thought I'd
have one of those kids you almost need a leash for, but he never went
far, he stuck close."
Tribal spokeswoman Marcella Hadden said Saturday morning that
volunteers and police from the region were looking for Carnell in woods
near a medical clinic.
Seventy-eight firefighters and more than 150
volunteers searched a 1-mile area around where the boy was seen last,
about 120 miles northwest of Detroit.
On Saturday evening, Tribal
Fire Department members were searching through a Dumpster on East Tomah
Road in Mt. Pleasant in connection with the investigation, the Mt.
Pleasant Morning Sun reported.
A tribal web posting describes Carnell as 3 feet tall, with green
eyes, short dark brown hair and last seen wearing a dark Angry Birds
T-shirt and blue or green shorts with green trim.
"I want to say
to whoever has him, can you please bring my son home? I just want him
back, I'll give whatever amount of money or I don't care what. I just
want him home," Chamberlain said, according to the Mt. Pleasant Morning
Sun.

Police investigating the mysterious
disappearance of a 4-year-old Saginaw Chippewa boy say they’re now
focusing on the child’s mother’s boyfriend.
And the boyfriend is not cooperating.
Carnel Chamberlain, the missing child, disappeared Thursday night from his
Tomah Road home east of Mt. Pleasant.
“The mother has been fully cooperative in this developing
investigation,” said Tribal spokesman Frank Cloutier in a statement
released Saturday morning. “The boyfriend, however, has not fully
cooperated in the investigation thus far.”
Neither adult has been named by Tribal authorities.

But after the day-long search, officials reported no significant leads.
Spotters, all of them wearing fluorescent yellow or green vests and
several perched under canopies and makeshift shelter from the sun, lined the roads.
Volunteer coordination, meanwhile, was headquartered in the Senior Room at the Tribal Operations building.
“There’s probably 15 different agencies helping out,” Cloutier said
Friday. More than 150 volunteers were part of the search, searching the
square-mile area around the house foot by foot. Volunteers came from the
Tribal community, the community at large, and included workers at the
Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, the Soaring Eagle Waterpark and Tribal Operations.
Carnell Chamberlain is described as a 4-year-old Native American boy,
approximately 3 feet tall with short dark hair and green eyes. He was

confirm there has been an abduction.

Tribal Police and rescue workers searched a
wastewater treatment pond visible from Carnel Chamberlain’s home on
Tomah Road on Sunday while a crowd of spectators gathered to watch.
Marcella Hadden, public relations manager from the Saginaw Chippewa

locations the boy, who has been missing since Thursday, might be.
Down the road, search efforts in a grid between Leaton and Shepherd
roads were called off around 5:30 p.m. Search and rescue experts called
the search because the area had been combed thoroughly.
Hadden said if search efforts needing volunteers continue on Monday,
volunteers would be called and information would be posted on the
Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe’s website and on its Facebook page.
Hadden said more than 100 volunteers joined the search on Sunday.
Rumors swirled Sunday evening that Carnel had been found, but Hadden said that is not true. Search efforts continue.

treatment plant near the child's home, but nothing significant was
found.
The boy is a member of the tribe and was reported missing by his
family around 10 p.m. Thursday night. The tribe has said the boy's
disappearance was "suspicious."
The tribe has said the boyfriend of the boy's mother initially had
not been cooperating with authorities, but was described as "minimally
cooperative" Sunday.
Carnell is described as three feet tall with black hair and green
eyes. He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt with an "Angry Bird" logo
and blue shorts with green trim.

The mother of a 4-year-old boy reported missing from a mid-Michigan
Indian reservation said Monday she is holding out hope that he'll be
found safe as additional searches were planned.
Jaimee Chamberlain, 21, told The Associated Press on Monday that her
son, Carnel Chamberlain, was being cared for by her boyfriend at her
home near Mount Pleasant when the child disappeared Thursday.
She said when she got home from work that night, her boyfriend — who
regularly spent time with her and the child — told her Carnel wasn't there.
"I ran inside and looked around. I didn't know what to do," said
Chamberlain, who went to a neighbor's home to see if she could find
Carnel and then called police.
After staying home during the early portion of the search at the request
of police, Chamberlain said she has been joining those looking for her son.
"I just want my son home and I don't want people to stop looking," she said.
Authorities planned to regroup Monday after search teams, the FBI,
police dogs and more than 100 volunteers scoured the area Sunday, said
Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe spokesman Frank Cloutier. Crews on Sunday
also searched ponds at a wastewater treatment plant near the child's
home, but nothing significant was found, he said.
The tribe has said the boy's disappearance was "suspicious." The tribe
also has said the mother's boyfriend initially had not been cooperating
with authorities, but was described as "minimally cooperative" Sunday.
In earlier reports about the search, the missing boy's first name was
spelled Carnell or Carnal, based on information released by the tribe.
The FBI is assisting tribal police on this case, and directed requests
for information about the search to tribal police, the FBI in Detroit
said Monday. The Isabella County sheriff's department also is assisting
in the search, but said it couldn't release information.

Really? What a shocker!
It's soooo frustrating isn't it Tom? The mother who is only 21 now must have got pregnant when she was 15. How many boyfriends did poor Carnel suffer before this one who has probably killed him? And the last article sorts out the spelling of his name so I've changed the title.
Important Message To Single Young Mothers: Don't use your boyfriends for babysitters while you work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it would be a good idea to have a boyfriend who works if you must have one!

Mother of 4-year-old missing Mount Pleasant boy Carnel Chamberlain: I took 2 polygraph tests and passed them both

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI — The mother of 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain, who has been missing since Thursday, said that she has taken two polygraph tests and passed both.
Jaimee Chamberlain, 21, reported her son missing at 10:12 p.m. Thursday. He is registered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
As of Tuesday, The Michigan state Police had not deemed the case appropriate for an Amber Alert, according to the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police.
Tribal police, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several other agencies, have been searching dense wooded areas, tribal lagoons and ponds near the boy's home on reservation land.
Carnel Chamberlain and his mother are members of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe.
Jaimee Chamberlain left her son in the care of her boyfriend, 20-year-old Anthony Bennett, while she worked Thursday.
She said that Bennett has watched her son about five times since the end of May. The two have been dating for about seven months, she said on Wednesday.
Police said that Jaimee Chamberlain was given a polygraph on June 22, but did not release the results.
She said on Wednesday that she had passed the test and a second one that was given. Bennett denied requests to take a polygraph test, police said.
Authorities questioned Bennett on Friday. Police said on Saturday that he was not cooperating in the investigation. They said he has since calmed down and is being "minimally cooperative."
A search warrant was issued on Monday for Bennett, according to tribal spokesperson Frank Cloutier.
The search is being conducted as a criminal investigation into the boy's disappearance.
Police said Bennett is a "person of interest" in the case.
More than 15 police agencies from Isabella County, Midland County and other surrounding areas, have participated in the nearly week-long search.
The FBI is assisting the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police. Authorities have used SONAR equipment and cadaver dogs to search ponds and heavily wooded areas near the boy's home.
Carnel Chamberlain stands three foot tall and weighs 37 pounds. He has short dark hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing a dark colored Angry Birds T-shirt and dark blue or green pants with a green trim.

- The family of missing 4-year-old child
Carnel Chamberlain has appointed Kevin Chamberlain as the family
spokeperson. Chamberlain is the cousin of Carnel’s mother, Jaimee
Chamberlain, a former Saginaw Chippewa Tribal chief, and a well-known musician.
Kevin describes Carnel as a very intelligent child. “He’s on the quiet
side, not the bouncing-off-the-walls kid. He keeps to himself and is
not a wanderer. He’s not the kind of kid that was easily pulled away by
external stimuli.”
“He has a good sense of humor; really a great little kid,” said Kevin.- Kevin Chamberlain describes Carnel’s relationship with his 21-year-old
mother Jaimee as “youthful in nature, a lot of fun, not stuffy and quiet.” - “They have a lot of things going on, they do a lot of things,” said Kevin.
- Jaimee Chamberlain worked a 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. shift at Isabella’s
restaurant at the Soaring Eagle Casino, and learned from her boyfriend
Anthony M. Bennett that her son was missing upon returning to her Tomah Road home. - Jaimee Chamberlain and 20-year-old Bennett had been in a relationship
the past seven months, and were living together with 4-year-old Carnel. - “We have a boyfriend who was with the child, a boyfriend who lost the
child under his care, and we have a boyfriend who isn’t cooperating in
any way,” said Kevin. - “That’s three red flags; there is no way we can trust him. It’s beyond
serious,” said Kevin. “My feelings are consistent with the family,
there’s too much wrong with his story and actions.” - Bennett has retained an attorney and is refusing a polygraph test.
Jaimee Chamberlain has taken and passed two polygraph tests at this
point in the investigation.http://www.themorningsun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120627/NEWS/120629712/kevin-chamberlain-speaks-on-behalf-of-missing-child-carnel-chamberlain-s-family

im sure we all know why the boyfriend isnt being cooperative-but what excuse does he have for being that way? his behavior makes him look guilty. if by some small chance he isnt guilty why not cooperate and let law enforcement focus elsewhere? a small child is missing and needs to b brought home. i dont get that feeling like i usually get about blaming the mom in this case. every child is important and i wish the judges, law enforcement, cps, families, etc could stand up against the ppl that perpetrate crimes against children and let them know that their behavior wont b tolerated anymore.

Body of Missing 4-Year-Old Mich. Boy Found
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. June 29, 2012 (AP)
The body of a 4-year-old boy missing for a week was found buried Thursday at his home, a family spokesman said.
Carnel Chamberlain's body was found under a wood porch or deck at the home on the reservation of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, 70 miles north of Lansing, Kevin Chamberlain said.
Chamberlain, the tribe's former chief, said he had no details about what led investigators back to the house after many days of searching woods, ponds and the tribe's wastewater treatment areas.
The body "had to be in a grave. We had looked underneath before and didn't see anything," he said.
Carnel disappeared on June 21 while in the care of his mother's boyfriend.
"There's a lot of anger, just utter despair and disbelief. I don't know how else to define it," said Chamberlain, who is a cousin of Carnel's mother, Jaimee Chamberlain. "After a long week of searching and hoping, we're at a horrific, bitter end."
Tribal police referred calls to the FBI, which declined to comment on the investigation. Any charges in the case would be handled by federal authorities, who have jurisdiction over major crimes on Indian reservations.
Police have said Jaimee Chamberlain's boyfriend was not very cooperative during the weeklong search and has consulted a lawyer.
Earlier this week, Jaimee Chamberlain told The Associated Press that her son was missing when she returned home from work on June 21. Her boyfriend told her Carnel wasn't around.
"I ran inside and looked around. I didn't know what to do," said Jaimee Chamberlain, who went to a neighbor's home to look for Carnel and then called police.

Re: CARNEL CHAMBERLAIN - 4 yo/ Convicted: Mother's BF: Anthony Bennett - Mount Pleasant MI
A choked up Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Chief Dennis Kequom said seeing all the people at the candlelight vigil for Carnel Chamberlain did his heart good.
Kequom said he wished seeing the group could have been under better circumstances.
A few hours before the vigil for the missing 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain was to begin, word spread that his body had been found under a porch at his mother’s home on East Tomah Road in Chippewa Township.
“Such a young little life,” Kequom said. “He didn’t have time to grow up and enjoy life.
“He’ll always be with us in our hearts.”
Tribal Chaplain Steve Pego spoke to the group assembled at the Tribal Operations government center at Leaton and Broadway roads, saying that Carnel is at the western doorway, on his way to heaven to meet the Creator and relatives, who will love him.
Speakers addressed the crowd between songs performed by a drum circle, with Carnel’s mother, Jaimee Chamberlain and other family members assembled behind an outdoor podium.
Last to speak before the Tribal and American flags were lowered to half-staff in honor of Carnel, Kevin Chamberlain, the family’s spokesman and former Tribal chief, urged love to conquer hate.
“We are here tonight for lour little Grasshopper,” Kevin said. “A week ago we embarked on a journey of love.”
At first, the family felt despair and hopelessness, which later turned to faith and hope during the week that Carnel was missing.
Kevin spoke to the crowd about Jaimee.
Relatives know Jaimee’s heart and her love for her son, Kevin said.
He also called on the crowd to feel love rather than hate.
“This moment is about Carnel,” he said, telling those in attendance that he does not want to dwell on the criminal aspect - Jaimee’s former boyfriend, Anthony Bennett, has been named a person of interest and was reported to be in police custody late Thursday night - but instead on Carnel.
Kevin also thanked the community, volunteers, law enforcement agencies and others for their help, prayers and support.
“This community picked us up and put us on their back,” he said. You proved that there is good in this world.”
Struggling with emotion at times, Kevin offered thanks from the family.
He thanked the Creator for strength and the community for standing by his family.
“We ask you to find more love in your heart than hate,” he said, adding that Carnel will always be with his loved ones in spirit.

Man charged with assaulting Mich. boy found dead
Jun 30, 2012 1:04 PM
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) - A
20-year-old man was charged Friday with beating and dragging a
4-year-old just weeks before the child's body was found under the porch
of his mother's home in mid-Michigan.
While Anthony Bennett was not
charged in the death of Carnel Chamberlain on Friday, family members say
he was the last person to see Carnel before his disappearance June 21. A
weeklong, seemingly fruitless search of woods and ponds around the
Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe reservation ended at the child's home Thursday.
Bennett faces a charge of
assault resulting in substantial bodily injury to a child under 16, and
was sent back to jail after the brief hearing in federal court in Bay
City to await a detention hearing Tuesday.
Federal prosecutors, who handle
major crimes on Indian reservations, do not want him released on bond,
but would not comment when asked if Bennett was being charged with
assault as a way of holding him until a more serious charge is brought.
The boy's mother, 21-year-old
Jaimee Chamberlain, has said Bennett was in charge of watching Carnel
while she was at work. When she returned, the boy was gone.
Kevin Chamberlain - Jaimee's
cousin, a family spokesman and the tribe's former chief - said Bennett
had been in his cousin's life for about seven months. He said the family
believed Bennett had a "troubled past" and that he came off as "a kind
of wannabe thug."
"We have no choice but to
believe he had something to do with it," Kevin Chamberlain said of
Carnel's death. "All eyes and arrows point right to him."
According to the two-page
criminal complaint, Jaimee Chamberlain told the FBI that she saw her son
with a bruised and swollen face as well as a cut lip in late May or
early June. She said he had been struck by Bennett when she was away
from the home.
A few days later, she saw
Bennett pick up her son by the neck and drop him before dragging him
into a room by his foot, according to the court document.
It wasn't known why Jaimee
Chamberlain allowed her son to be in her boyfriend's company if she
believed he was abusing the boy. She answered her phone when contacted
by The Associated Press but hung up without commenting.
Bennett did not appear with a
lawyer Friday, but Detroit attorney Anthony Chambers later was assigned
to the case. Chambers declined to comment, saying he hadn't talked to
Bennett and wasn't familiar yet with the evidence.
Authorities declined to comment outside the courtroom, which was full of people supporting Carnel and his mother.
"I'm here for Carnel. I am Carnel," grandmother Joann Chamberlain said.
A tribal police car sat outside
the family's house, not far from the headquarters of the Saginaw
Chippewa tribe and the tribe's financial lifeblood, the Soaring Eagle
Casino and Resort.
People were leaving flowers and
items of remembrance for the little boy at the home. At midday, a man
got out of a vehicle and placed a stuffed animal on the fence before
hopping back in and driving away.
"Nothing this monumentally
horrific has ever happened in our community," Kevin Chamberlain said.
"Right now, it's a very somber place with a lot of broken hearts."
Carnel's great-aunt, Esther
Chatfield, 58, lives next door to the home. She said she and her husband
became Jaimee Chamberlain's foster parents when Chamberlain was 8 years old.
"My husband and I are just destroyed by this," Chatfield said.

A very sad but predictable outcome. I felt I had to comment about the fact that it took a week to find him and he was under the deck of their house??
Surely a cadaver dog would have found him in a second? They looked under there and didn't see him or a grave?
Sounds like shoddy police work and makes me wonder if some of the other missing toddlers in other cases are right under everyone's feet too!
They are usually 'somewhere close'

They are usually 'somewhere close'
---When I read that I got a chill up my spine. Some may not know that those were the words used by SnackCakes in one of her earliest encounters with the police detectives. I can hear it like it was yesterday, I feel she's somewhere close.
For those who have been to that little woodsy area at the end of Hope Spring Dr it is an indelible memory. To think that Caylee's body lie for months on end just mere yards away from the backyard in which she grew up, played in her special house and swam in the pool.
For those who have not been there let me assure you, the only thing closer would have been her own backyard.
