Jackson County runaways found safe, charged
JACKSON COUNTY -- A desperate search for two runaway Jackson County
teenagers has ended with both found alive and well -- and facing
charges.
Courtney Hawkins and her boyfriend Dillan Stewart, both
16, were found this morning around 12:30 a.m. along with a third
juvenile whose name is not being released.
"They're doing okay,
neither one of them was injured, neither one of them is showing signs of
being held against their will," Mark Majka, Assistant Chief Deputy with
the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, said of Hawkins and Stewart.
Community
members and law enforcement agencies were quick to begin searching for
Hawkins and Stewart but ultimately it was a cell phone that helped
officers locate them.
"We got some information through Verizon
(Wireless) where they were located with their cell phones," Majka said.
"We did a bit of a trace on it that way. We staked out in the area. They
went past one of our officers and he recognized the gentleman sitting
in the back seat as being Dillan."
Officers performed a traffic stop and called the parents of the teens.
Majka says he doesn't know any details about where the teens were going but says they were definitely running away.
Hawkins
and Stewart were reported missing Tuesday afternoon by their parents
and an endangered child alert was issued for the teens.
Hawkins'
vehicle was reportedly found in the high school parking lot with a
cracked windshield and a footprint in the driver's side door.
"It appears the damage was done previously," Majka noted.
Members
of the community took to social media sharing photos of the teens in an
effort to get anyone with information to come forward.
"We did
get some information from people late last night of them being seen
here," Majka said. "It's hard to run down every lead. Once you get to
that point where you receive the information and you get to where they
were seen most generally they've either been there and gone or were seen
as someone different."
The TBI, THP, the Putnam County
Sherrif's Department, members of the community and other agencies helped
the Jackson County Sheriff's Department to search the area.
"It was an all day effort yesterday," Majka said.
Today, all three teens will be in juvenile court to face the charges against them.
