Bond slashed for suspected baby killer

William Joe Blankenburg had his bond reduced from $1 million to $500,000 this week in his first-degree murder case, but he still remains in custody.
Blankenburg was arrested July 11 — seven months after the death of his girlfriend's 7-month-old daughter, Meghann Mitchell.
The 24-year-old brought Mehgann to UMC on Nov. 15.
According to sheriff's officials and CPS records, the baby had traumatic injuries to her head and chest. She also had a human bite mark on her forearm and bruises on her shoulder and leg.
She died two days later, after being taken off life support.
The girl's mother told detectives she was at work when the girl was hurt and Blankenburg was the only person with the girl at the time.
Blankenburg was indicted last month on the murder count, along with a child abuse count.
Earlier this week, Assistant Pima County Public Defender Dean Brault convinced Judge Jane Eikleberry to reduce Blankenburg's bail.
Brault pointed out that Blankenburg didn't flee between the time of the baby's death and his arrest, despite knowing he was under investigation.
He also said Blankenburg has no criminal history and the support of the baby's mother and other family members. He was also working up until his arrest. (As a certified nursing assistant.)
He's due back in court Aug. 21.
