FOX 5 News has learned a 2-year-old girl reported missing from the
New Birth Missionary Baptist Church campus on Tuesday has been found
safe.
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A 2-year-old girl reported missing from the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church campus on Tuesday has been found safe.
FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor says Myrai Robinson was found inside a dark gray
2010 Dodge Caravan at Lithonia High School after more than three hours
of searching.
According to DeKalb police, a daycare provider left
the child sleeping inside the van at the Life Center at New Birth
Missionary Baptist Church as she went inside the fitness center to run a
quick errand. After about 5 to 7 minutes, she returned to find the van
and Robinson gone.
The stolen van sparked an immediate search.
Family members begged the community to help find Robinson. Yvette
English, Robinson's aunt, jumped in her car to go look for the missing girl.
Proctor reports that Melba Williams spotted the van in the parking lot after seeing the story on FOX 5 News at Noon.
"I could see the baby and she was screaming, so I stopped and I got out
and said, ‘Momma's coming.' Then I dialed 911," said Williams.
Williams said that she calmed the child down as she waited for police.
"She didn't seem hurt or anything. She was just happy to see someone,"
Williams said. "I just kept saying, ‘It's going to be OK, Mommy is gonna
be here.'"
After a short time, the girl was reunited with her mother, Charity Gibson.
"I just want to say thank you. It's truly a blessing that we were able to
find her because most of the time things like this don't turn out so
good," said Gibson.
Myrai's family said they were grateful for the community's support.
"It's still a lot of great, wonderful people in this community and it just
goes to show you that. …at times like this, the best in people comes
out," said a family member.
DeKalb County police are still
looking for the man who stole the van. They said they are reviewing
surveillance footage to hopefully get some clues.
