Toddler dies, Jacksonville man's charge upgraded to murder

Charges against a 20-year-old Jacksonville man have been changed to murder following the death of a 2-year-old girl in his care.

Devonte Rashad Baker of Torres Court was charged with aggravated child abuse
causing great bodily harm on Dec. 15 after toddler Brooklyn Sue Sanchez
was taken to a hospital unresponsive. Baker was supervising the girl at
his home when she was injured, police said.

Baker initially told detectives that the girl had slipped in the
shower and hit her head. He later said he became frustrated after the
girl had busted her lip in the shower and would not stop crying,
according to his arrest report. She was shoved to the ground and struck
her head on the floor. He said he then became scared and carried her to
her bed before another caretaker returned and took the child to a
hospital.

She was on life support until her death Dec. 18, the Sheriff’s Office
said. The medical examiner later ruled the cause of death was from
blunt force to the head, prompting Baker’s new charge Wednesday.

Nothing has happened in this case since he pleaded not guilty.
