Keizer man pleads guilty to manslaughter in death of girlfriend's 4-year-old son

Gerardo Chavarria, 24, of Keizer, pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter and two counts of criminal mistreatment in Marion County Circuit Court on Tuesday.

Chavarria was accused of killing his girlfriend's 4-year-old son Sebastian Iturbe at their home in 2011.

In a plea change hearing before Judge Jamese Rhoades, Chavarria admitted to hitting the boy's head against the floor when he got angry with him for spilling his beer.

Iturbe suffered head injuries that he died from after he was transported to a Portland hospital.

Chavarria also described two other incidents in which he imposed physical harm on the boy.

Iturbe's mother, Erika Iturbe, and his grandparents were in court and made tearful statements to Chavarria before the court.

Chavarria will serve 25 years in prison and will be forced to pay restitution and attorney fees.

He should have gotten the death penalty but at least it's some justice.  This never made it to national news.  I only just came across it.  William
