Body found may be of Fresno teen Steven Humphry, missing since 2009: Cops

The grisly discovery was made when the body was found in the back yard of home in same neighborhood in which he had lived.

Steven Humphrey, of Fresno County, California, was reported missing in 2009.



Cops believe they've found the body of a teen missing for more than four years buried in the backyard of a California home.

Officers think the decomposed corpse discovered in South Dearing Ave., Fresno, is that of 16-year-old Steven Humphrey.

Last seen on Jan. 26, 2009, he lived in the same neighborhood.

Investigators spent eight hours digging up 20 tons of dirt from the yard on Tuesday before finding the as yet unidentified body, Lt. Mark Salazar told KFSN.

Humphrey's uncle Randy Essman told the Fresno Bee he thought the body was that of his nephew, and added that the family had long suspected foul play.

"Now we know he's not going to come home, but it's stirring it all up
again," Essman said. "We've been waiting for this day for four years."

Humphrey's cousin Ben Essman added: "We have for the most part known
where [HIS BODY HAS]been for a few years now and no action has really
been taken until now."

The body was sent to a medical examiner's office to be identified.

Police do not yet have any suspects in relation to the case.

THE STORY

On January 26th, 2009 Steven Humphrey went to a neighborhood teen’s house down the street from where he lived, but he never returned home. Immediately Steven’s family suspected foul play, but they were forced to wait three long days due to many teenagers being runaways and not actually missing. A few weeks went by and rumors around the neighborhood began to surface that the teen he visited had killed him. Steven’s family had had the same gut feeling but hoped and prayed for a different outcome. Sadly they knew in their hearts that the rumors were true. Then after four long years of prayers, missing person flyers, and police department gathering evidence. They received a creditable tip that there was a body buried in the backyard of the house where Steven was last seen. On April 17, 2013 Fresno Police brought 21 detectives and digging equipment, then after digging 20 tons of dirt and 10 feet down they found remains of a teenage boy. Within a week of discovering the remains, Fresno Police department positively identified the remains to be Steven Humphrey.
