NEWTON N.C. -- William Howard Lail, 25, charged with one count of murder and two counts of intentional child abuse, inflicting serious injury on Friday, is awaiting his first hearing in District Court in Newton before Judge Gregory R. Hayes today.

Hayes was holding Lail's first appearance until his lawyer, Victoria Jayne, could arrive in court. When Jayne did not arrive during the morning session, Hayes recessed until 2 p.m., with the promise that Lail would have his first appearance in court whether or not Jayne made it to court.

Lail was charged in the death of a 1-year-old boy he was watching for his girlfriend at a duplex at 629 25th Street NW in Long View. He is also charged with with intentional child abuse in the case of the boy and a 3-year-old, who is
the boy's older sister.
