Shane Franklyn Miller is the suspect in a triple murder that happened in Shingletown Tuesday night. He's considered "armed and extremely dangerous." Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call 911 or the sheriff's office at 245-6540.

SHINGLETOWN — Shasta County sheriff’s officials have identified the three victims killed Tuesday in a triple homicide in Shingletown.

The three are identified as the wife of the suspect, 34-year-old Sandy Miller, and two daughters, Shelby Miller, 8, and Shasta Miller, 4. The children's father, Shane Franklyn Miller, 45, is being sought by deputies and is considered armed and dangerous.

An alert issued by law enforcement at about 10:30 a.m. today said Miller, whose birthday is today, was possibly headed to a cabin in Ferndale, where he may have a cache of weapons.

Miller is 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighs 200 pounds and has red hair and blue eyes, sheriff's Lt. Tom Campbell said. He is driving a gold 2010 Dodge Mega Cab pickup with a camper shell and California license plate of 8Z75988, according to the Sheriff's Office

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call 911 or the sheriff's office at 245-6540.

Black Butte Elementary and Middle Schools were both under lockdown this morning. Redding Christian School and Chrysalis Charter School, both in Palo Cedro, are on lockdown this morning. Officials at Junction School in Palo Cedro had also ordered doors to all classrooms locked.

Millville Elementary School was on a “soft lock down,” but that was because the students are taking tests all morning.

Mindy DeSantis, principal and superintendent, said the school had not received any official notification from authorities, and the staff is following developments.

Former Redding Police Chief Peter Hansen lives near the crime scene, which is at 28400 Alpine Way in Shingletown.

Hansen said he barely knows Miller, but he's lived there for a few years with a wife or girlfriend and he believes two children as well.

"I hardly know them," Hansen said. "They’ve lived in that house for three or four years."

Hansen said he's probably talked to Miller once or twice in that time.
Deputies and coroner's investigators spent the night at the house where the bodies were found and were still there late this morning.

Miller owns the residence where the killing occurred, according to Enplan Parcel Viewer. The three-bedroom, 2 bath house is on a 5.65-acre lot and was purchased for $330,000 in 2007, according to real estate records..

The two-story house sits nestled among pine trees. There is a barn and greenhouse in the back. Horses and llamas graze on the property's acreage.

Neighbors, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Record Searchlight Miller used the house as a weekend home, and confirmed that a woman and children stayed with him there.

Deputies went to the residence in the 28400 block of Alpine Way about a quarter-mile from Black Butte Road after receiving a call around 7:44 p.m.

Part of Alpine Way was roped off with crime tape and at least five sheriff’s units were in the neighborhood. Several ambulances also were seen at the crime scene about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday night. This morning, more law enforcement officers arrived to the scene. A portable toilet was dropped off and a locksmith brought out.

Deputies initially said they were investigating a stabbing and a report of a dead body, and at 9:15 p.m. deputies told dispatchers they were searching the exterior of the residence.

Other than a few traffic tickets, Miller does not have a criminal history in Shasta, Tehama, Siskiyou or Trinity counties, according to electronic court records.

He was the defendant in a 2003-04 civil lawsuit filed against him by General Motors Acceptance Corp.

A default judgment ordered Miller to pay $9,405 to the corporation, according to electronic Shasta County court records.

A Humboldt County Superior Court spokeswoman said Miller has an extensive criminal history in that county dating back to the early 1990s.

His cases included felony hit-and-run with injury in 1996, misdemeanor driving on a suspended license in 1994, being drunk in public and misdemeanor DUI in 1993, she said.

Additionally, she said, he was convicted in 1996 of felony marijuana cultivation

I just don't understand how a father could kill his own children. I wonder if this was another custody fight killing. Sad, another two little girls, little angels gone. SHELBY and SHASTA MILLER - 8 and 4 yo - / Accused: Shane Franklyn Miller, father - Shingletown, CA 380822 William

It just seems to happen more and more.

If it's not some shag ass man murdering his girlfriend's babies and children, it's one of the parents.

Authorities have discovered the pickup truck of an "extremely dangerous" Northern California man who they say is the prime suspect in the triple homicide of his wife and two daughters.

Shane Franklin Miller is considered heavily armed and dangerous, according to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office. The 45-year-old is believed to have gunned down his family at their home in rural Shingletown, Calif., about 230 miles northeast of San Francisco on Tuesday.

"There is a manhunt for him right now. He's a prime suspect. We're not looking for anybody else," Lt. Dave Kent said. "We found several different types of weapons, ammunition in the house, so he may be heavily fortified at this time."

Police have launched a nationwide manhunt for Miller.

The bodies of Miller's wife, Sandy, 34, and two daughters, Shelby, 8, and Shasta, 4, were discovered after a call was received from the family's residence just before 8 p.m. It is unclear who placed the call, but authorities said that it came from one of the victims while the shooting was in progress.

Police have yet to determine a motive for the shooting. Kent said last month officers went to Miller's home on a domestic dispute call.

Miller was believed be driving a gold-colored 2010 Dodge Mega Cab pickup with a camper shell.

Wednesday night police received calls that Miller's vehicle may have been spotted in both Petrolia, Calif. and Honeydew, Calif., towns over 200 miles away, near the California coastline. Deputies and officers from the other agencies converged on the area. A search turned up the truck parked and vacant.

Police told The AP that Miller be heading to a cabin in coastal Humboldt County, where authorities have said several weapons may be stored.

Black Butte Union Elementary School District official Don Aust told The Record Searchlight that Shelby and Shasta were pulled out of school within the last month.

A Humboldt County native wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of his wife and two young daughters may have, according to federal court documents, fled to Oregon to property bought using cash or a straw buyer, the Redding Record Searchlight reported Tuesday.

Shane Franklyn Miller, 45, was also added to the U.S. Marshals Service's “15 Most Wanted” list on Tuesday, with a wanted poster that describes him as “an individual who has no regard for human life” and the only suspect in his family's “cold-blooded murder.”

Miller was the subject of a massive manhunt in the Mattole Valley during May. Authorities say he gunned down his wife Sandy and daughters Shelby Miller, 8, and Shasta Miller, 4, in their Shingletown home in Shasta County on May 7 before fleeing 200 miles to the Humboldt County, where he abandoned his truck and the family dog.

”The U.S. Marshals Service reserves placement on our 15 Most Wanted for those suspected of heinous crimes such as the ones Miller is accused of committing,” said U.S. Marshals Service Director Stacia A. Hylton in a release. “Our deputies will use all of our available resources with our federal and local law enforcement partners to bring this suspect to justice.”

The Marshals Service believes Miller may be in Oregon, possibly near Roseburg or Eugene. Roseburg is about 250 miles north of Redding on Interstate 5 while Eugene is another about 72 miles north of Roseburg.

His wanted poster cautions that Miller is considered armed and dangerous. He has been charged with three counts of murder in Shasta County and officials said he threatened the lives of several other family members.

”Shane Miller is an individual who has no regard for human life. He is the only suspect in the cold blooded murder of his two young daughters and his wife in May 2013,” the poster reads. “Prior to this incident Miller made threats to kill his wife, daughters, mother-in-law, sister-in-law and her children. Miller is a convicted felon who has convictions for weapon and drug offenses. He is also known to be an avid outdoorsman with survival skills.”

According to the Marshals Service, Shasta County Sheriff's Office deputies aided Sandy Miller in leaving her home after an April 20 domestic dispute with her husband. Later that day, Shane Miller located her at a Humboldt County motel and drove her back to Shasta County. Two weeks later, Sandy Miller and her two daughters were found dead after the Shasta County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call.

Authorities said a dispatcher heard a female sobbing and several loud banging sounds over the phone. Shasta deputies immediately responded to the location where they discovered the bodies of Miller's 5-year-old and 8-year-old daughters, and his wife.

Miller made contact with a woman he had a past relationship with in Petrolia the day after his family was found dead, and his truck was later found on Mattole Road. High school friends and others who knew him during his time in Humboldt told the Times-Standard that he has outdoor survival skills and knows the wilderness area where he was last seen.

Shane and Sandy Miller visited Seattle shortly before the murders and his cell phone pinged several towers in the Eugene area during that trip, according to court documents.

His cell phone records also revealed he'd inquired about rural property near Roseburg, supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Marco Rodriguez said in an affidavit accompanying the federal complaint against Shane Miller.

”Miller is a survivalist, who frequently uses cash for purchases,” Rodriguez said in the affidavit. “Investigators suspect (Shane) Miller purchased property in Oregon using cash, a false name and/or a straw purchaser.”

Miller's criminal history includes arrests for possession of a firearm, ammunition, cultivation of marijuana, resisting an officer, and hit-and-run causing death or injury. In 2007, Miller was released from federal custody after serving a 46-month sentence for possession of a machine gun and marijuana cultivation.

In late June, officials searched an underground bunker on a property east of Redding that belongs to Miller. Investigators told the Redding Record Searchlight that search teams found the prefabricated bunker, but no sign of Miller. Inside the bunker, deputies found a “large cache of weapons and ammunition,” including various types of rifles, shotguns and handguns, the paper reported.

A reward of up to $25,000 is offered for information leading directly to Miller's arrest. The U.S. Marshals Service asks anyone with information to connect one of its offices or the U.S. Marshals Service Communications Center at 1-800-336-0102.

(Newser) – A California survivalist remains missing seven months after his wife and two girls were found dead—and his hometown is still grappling with the loss, NBC News reports. Shane Miller, 45, was a marijuana grower with a criminal history in Shingletown, a village nestled amid northern California's wooded mountains. When a woman at Miller's house called 911 in May, sobbing with loud bangs in the background, sheriff's deputies rushed to the scene—to find Miller's 34-year-old wife Sandra and two young daughters shot dead. Miller, of course, was gone.

Authorities found his abandoned truck the next day, but the hunt has gotten complicated. Finding a true survivalist amid the Douglas firs and redwoods of the "Lost Coast" isn't easy, and Miller could be hiding in Mexico or even India. Investigators also searched nearby property of his and found a homemade, underground bunker with all kinds of guns—but no sign of Miller. And authorities say they are deluged with about 30 tips a day. Meanwhile, Shingletown residents have planted three memorial trees for the victims.

"I really would like closure on this," says Sandra's hairdresser, who still feels her "very sweet" spirit. "When they get him, I know that I’ll feel peace."

Skeleton found near northern California coast is suspected killer Shane Miller

Shasta County Sheriff’s Office says Shane Miller, 45, was wanted in connection to the death of his wife and two children in 2013, but his skeletal remains were found along the California coast near his truck he abandoned the day after the murders. Miller was featured in CNN's 'The Hunt with John Walsh.'

SHELBY and SHASTA MILLER - 8 and 4 yo - / Accused: Shane Franklyn Miller, father - Shingletown, CA Shane-miller KRCR Shasta Miller, 4, and Shelby Miller, 8, are the daughters of wanted fugitive Shane Miller.

The remains of Shane Miller, the man suspected of slaying his wife and children in 2013, have been discovered along the northern California coast.

Dental records show the skeletal remains found by an anonymous person on Friday night along the Mattole River is the 45-year-old wanted since last year on murder charges in connection to the death of his wife, Sandy, and children, Shelby, 8, and Shasta, 5, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found the gruesome murders after dispatchers received a 911 call from the Millers’ rural home near the Lassen National Forest and heard a woman sobbing in the background before several banging sounds interrupted the cries, according to the Record-Searchlight newspaper.

The tragic killings likely stemmed from a domestic dispute.

The murders were featured in an episode of CNN’s “The Hunt with John Walsh” to seek information on Miller’s whereabouts.

In the episode, Sandy Miller and her children reportedly checked into One Safe Place, a women’s shelter in Redding, after running away at one point from her violent husband, Mare Deutcher, a client advocate, said.

“She appeared very tired. The girls were very tearful, red-eyed, exhausted. They had a long time getting off the mountain,” Deutcher said.

Sandy Miller told shelter staff her husband had choked her and threatened to kill her and the children.

The cause of Shane Miller’s death has not been officially determined, but according to the Lost Coast Outpost newspaper, detectives reportedly told Janine Johnson, the last person to speak with Miller, he may have committed suicide.

Shasta County detectives were notified about the discovery because the body was found very near to where Miller abandoned his truck and disappeared into the wilderness.

Miller is the second suspect to wind up dead after being featured on “The Hunt.”

Last week, a tip led the New York Police Department to Charles Mozdir, a suspected sex offender accused in a child molestation case out of California. The confrontation, however, led to the death Mozdir in a West Village shootout with U.S. marshals and NYPD detectives.
