The two had been on a stroll through Central City, when shots rang out around 8:20pm. NBC News reports that there were two shots fired, both passing through the babysitter's torso and into baby Londyn.
She was able to frantically call Londyn's father, 20-year-old Keion Reed, alerting him that his little daughter was shot. Her mother, Andrea Samuels, 22, broke down crying when she heard the news, family members told WWLTV.

"She was my world, she was everything, she was my reason for getting up in the morning," the grief-stricken father later told the station.
Family members told the Times-Picayune that Londyn was just learning how to walk. "She used to stand on her feet and try to wiggle," her aunt, Euneka McGee, 20, told the paper.

On Friday, Aug. 30, family members of murdered toddler Londyn Samuels gather at the spot where she was killed on Thursday in Central City to remember the happy one-year-old.
In the hours following Thursday’s shooting, the New Orleans Police Department rushed to find the shooting suspects, releasing grainy surveillance video showing a shadowy figure climbing over a fence and making a run for it.
Witnesses told police that the y saw two men running from the scene of the shooting, though authorities do not believe that the two were caught in crossfire.
NOPD
NOPD releases surveillance photos of baby shooting suspects, showing a shadowy figure running off after the murder.
According to the Times-Picayune, the NOPD has taken in a man and a woman for questioning, and are searching for a second man in regard to the shooting.
The city's mayor, Mitch Landrieu, told NBC News that the violence must be quashed. "When a young man kills a child in the arms of an 18-year-old, we have to take it to a new level," he said.
While date from the NOPD shows that murder rates fell between 2012 and 2013, other crimes like rape are on the rise.
Activists and supporters of the family are crying out for peace, and for justice. Reed told NBC News: "My daughter didn't do anything to him. Why did she have to die?"

SWAT standoff in probe of baby murdered
Dave Cohen Reporting
New Orleans Police have gotten into a standoff with possible suspects in the murder of a small child and the wounding of the baby's sitter.
"Just after midnight our detectives attempted to interview an individual at a residence in the 2800 block of Lasalle Street. The occupants inside of the residence refused to speak with our detectives," Officer Frank Robertson said. "The SWAT Team has been deployed and is on the scene."
Cops were trying to talk to the people in the house to determine if they were involved in the deadly shooting on South Saratoga Street last night.
Robertson offered this update around 8:00am:
"Our SWAT team made contact with two adult females and one adult male. We are currently in the process of interviewing them. Our SWAT team is currently searching for another male who might be still inside of the residence. In addition three children were also inside of the residence. No one was injured or hurt during this process. The SWAT Team remains to be active on this scene."
Around 9:30am, Roberstson said, "All vehicular and pedestrian traffic is now permitted along LaSalle Street. No further information is available at this time."
It is all related to the double shooting.
"Homicide Detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a 1-year-old girl and the injuring of an 18-year-old female caretaker" Robertson said in a news release. "The incident occurred just before 8:30pm."
He says the sitter was walking with the 13-month-old girl.
"The caretaker was walking in the block with the baby when gunfire erupted. The caretaker ran into a residence in the area after her and the baby sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies," Robertson explained. "The occupants of the residence called for police who arrived on the scene in less than a minute. EMS arrived less than five minutes and transported both victims to the hospital where the baby was pronounced dead and the 18-year-old female is listed stable condition."
In the release, Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said, "When these men opened fire, it was still early, and people were still out and about in the neighborhood. We need people to come forward, and tell us what they know. These men took a baby's life tonight, and wounded a young woman. They don't deserve to walk freely among the people of New Orleans. They must answer for what they've done", Serpas said.
As for the suspects, Robertson said, "Two unknown African American males who are believed to be the perpetrators."
He added, "Citizens with information that can help solve these crimes are asked to call CRIMESTOPPERS at 822-1111 or toll-free 1-877-903-STOP. You could receive a cash reward of up to $2,500 for the information leading to the arrest and indictment of the responsible person(s). You do not have to give your name nor testify to receive the reward. Citizens can also submit an anonymous tip online to Crimestoppers at www.crimestoppersgno.org"
