California baby dies after drinking mother’s drug-laced milk
Ryder Salmen overdosed on Xanax, methadone and the painkiller Opana at 8 months old and now mother Sarah Stephens, 32, faces murder and child endangerment charges in Sacramento County. The drug addict mom was previously warned to stop breastfeeding after medical tests showed high levels of methadone in her son's blood.

Sarah Stephens faces murder charges in the death of her baby, who died after drinking his mother’s drug-poisoned breast milk, authorities say.
A baby boy died in California after drinking his mother’s drug-laced milk.
Ryder Salmen was 8 months old when he overdosed on Xanax, methadone and the painkiller Opana, the Sacramento Bee reported.
Baby Ryder’s death was at first a mystery. Citrus Heights police found the boy dead in September 2012 after they were called to an apartment for an unresponsive infant. Toxicology reports later revealed a poisonous cocktail of drugs killed the child, police said in a statement.
The Sacramento County District Attorney has now charged the mother, 32-year-old Sarah Ann Stephens, with second-degree murder and felony child endangerment. Stephens intentionally fed the boy the lethal milk, police said.
Ryder’s grandfather, Alan Salmen, said his family knew the baby was in trouble and fought for custody.
“We reached out,” Salmen told Sacramento’s Fox 40. “We knew what was going on, ‘please give him to us. If you don’t have the time or don’t want to do it, please, we’re here.’”
Stephens retained half custody of Ryder even after an accidental overdose put the baby boy, then two months old, in the hospital , Salmen said. When Salmen’s family did see Ryder, the boy suffered constant withdrawal from the drugs, he said.

Ryder Salmen was 8 months old when he was killed by lethal drugs found in his mother’s breast milk.
“Whatever Ryder was, we loved him,” Salmen said. “He could cry in our arms 24 hours.”
Child advocates say Sacramento County Child Protective Services was slow to react to the warning signs.
Court documents show Stephens was warned months before her son’s death to stop breastfeeding because Ryder had high levels of methadone in his bloodstream.
The boy was just four months old at the time and he’d been brought to the hospital because he was lethargic.
Social workers identified Ryder as an at-risk baby after the visit — a determination that should have prompted a safety plan if the infant was to remain in his mother’s custody, the Sacramento Bee reported.
Records show a social worker created a plan, but it took a CPS manager three months to approve it.
Ed Howard, senior counsel for the Children’s Advocacy Institute at the University of San Diego School of Law, reviewed the case at the request of the newspaper and said the response was unacceptable.

Ryder Salmen suffered constant drug withdrawal when away from his mother, relatives say.
“Is it their policy to wait three months to approve safety assessments for the children of drug-addicted mothers?” Howard said. “This undermines the confidence about whether Sacramento County CPS is doing its job.”
CPS Deputy Director Michelle Callejas said approvals sometimes take awhile.
In a later assessment, the agency claimed Ryder faced a low risk of future mistreatment.
Police, however, were concerned. A Citrus Heights cop cited Stephens for child endangerment after she drove off the road with Ryder in the back seat.
That led to another report to CPS, but records obtained by the paper show no further risk assessments by the agency.

This poor baby had a miserable, painful life.
This should be first degree IMO. This POS is not a kid, she knew better and was told time and time again what she was doing to her baby.
WTF didn't she use formula?

I can't even imagine the anguish of the grandparents who tried and tried and tried to save this precious baby. What a travesty.
