More child abuse charges filed in Mentone case, 350k Bail Bond

San Bernardino County prosecutors have filed additional child abuse charges against a Mentone couple stemming from what investigators believe were multiple battering incidents against the woman’s two young daughters over a nine-month period.
Jordan Joseph Brommer, 20, and Cheryl Christine Mock, 19, are now charged with six counts each of child abuse resulting in great bodily injury to a child under age 5.
The couple was initially charged with two counts each of child abuse with great bodily injury and pleaded not guilty.
Mock is the mother of the two children, but Brommer is not their father.
Brommer and Mock were in Superior Court on Friday where Judge John Martin granted Deputy District Attorney Melissa Rodriguez’s request that the couple’s bail bond be increased from $100,000 to $350,000 each because of the seriousness of the charges.
Their next court date is set for April 13.
Rodriguez said after court that the additional charges were filed based on medical examinations of the two girls that showed older injuries that were in the process of healing and newer injuries.
Investigators believe there were three separate beating incidents between June 2010 and Feb. 26, when Brommer and Mock were arrested, Rodriguez said.
Paramedics were called to the Mentone apartment where they lived and found the 3-year-old having trouble breathing. The children were put into protective custody and taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment.
Rodriguez said she did not know the condition of the children and would not reveal where they were.
The amended complaint filed in the case provides more information about the girls who are referred to as Jane Doe with a birth date of March 21, 2007, and Jane Doe with a birth date of March 16, 2009.
According to the complaint, the 3-year-old suffered a skull fracture with brain injury, three fractured ribs on her left hand side and three fractured ribs on her right side.
The 1-year-old suffered three fractured ribs and a lacerated liver, a broken collarbone and a fractured shin bone.
Mock remains in custody at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino, and Brommer is being held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Alleged child abusers face additonal charges

SAN BERNARDINO - A Mentone couple accused of an "extreme" case of child abuse involving two young girls faced more criminal charges Friday and had their bail raised substantially.
Prosecutors requested the bail increase for Cheryl Christine Mock, 19, and Jordan Joseph Brommer, 20, based on an amended set of charges filed against them Wednesday in San Bernardino Superior Court.
Judge John Martin raised the bail to $400,000 for Mock, the girls' mother, and $350,000 for Brommer.
"The bail was under set," Deputy District Attorney Michelle Rodriguez said. "We just want to make sure public safety doesn't become an issue."
Mock and Brommer return to court April 13. The additional $50,000 bail for Mock, when compared to her co-defendant, is related to a separate case, Rodriguez said.
In the newest set of charges, prosecutors allege three separate abuse incidents occurred between June to February to the girls, ages 3 and 1.
The older girl had suffered a brain injury, a skull fracture and three fractured ribs on both sides, the charges allege. The younger girl, now just several days shy turning 2, had suffered a lacerated liver, three fractured ribs, a broken clavicle and a fractured tibia.
The additional charges are based on the victims' medical records that were handed over to prosecutors, Rodriguez said. The defendants are each charged with six counts of child abuse, and they entered a not guilty plea to the charges.
"It's one of the more extreme cases that we've seen," said Rodriguez.
Prosecutors are awaiting more medical reports for the girls.
Mock's lawyer, Marjorie Barrios, said her client had not authorized her to speak publicly about the case. Lawyer Earl Carter, who represents Brommer, could not be reached at his office.
The pair were arrested Feb. 26 after paramedics were called at 12:30 a.m. to a residence in the 1200 block of Crafton Avenue on a report of a child not breathing, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the older girl having seizures and with several bruises on her body.
Sheriff's officials say Mock told authorities that the girl fell out of bed, and the child's injuries didn't match-up with the mother's statements.
Deputies later found the younger girl had several bruises covering her body. Both children were taken to a hospital, where they were listed in serious condition.
Prosecutors did not disclose the children's current condition.
Both defendants were together at the time, but they were not cohabitating, prosecutors said. They both had physical access to the children, they added.
Mock has a prior misdemeanor conviction for grand theft. She pleaded guilty to that charge as part of a plea bargain April 28 and was sentenced to three years probation, according to sheriff's department and court records.
Mock is being held in protective custody at Central Detention Center, in San Bernardino, while Brommer is being held at West Valley Detention Center, in Rancho Cucamonga.
