Bethany man sexually abused at least 1 child victim for several years, court documents say

An alleged victim of a Bethany man facing allegations of child sex abuse told an investigator that the abuse began when the alleged victim was around 12 and continued to his 18th birthday, court documents say.

A Washington County Sheriff's detective wrote in a probable cause affidavit that after launching an investigation in September 2013 he spoke to several boys under 18 who said Johnathan Richard Black, 39, abused them. The boys said Black's tactics included providing them with alcohol and showing them pornography, the affidavit said.

Deputies began investigating Black after the Oregon Department of Human Services contacted them regarding allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with one boy, said Sgt. Bob Ray, a sheriff's spokesman.

Black turned himself in to Washington County deputies on Sunday following a grand jury indictment Feb. 27 on charges of sexual abuse, sodomy, using a child in display of sexually explicit conduct, luring a minor and unlawful delivery of marijuana to a minor, Ray said. The man also used marijuana to lure the children, Ray said.

The incidents allegedly occurred between September 2007 and September 2013 and involved five victims, according to court records. The boys were friends of Black's family and investigators think there could be more victims.

Black, who has worked as an emergency dispatcher at Oregon Health & Sciences University Hospital since November 2009, pleaded not guilty to the charges in Washington County Circuit Court on Monday. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 25.

One alleged victim, now 18, told a Washington County Sheriff's detective that between 2007 and 2008, he was being driven home by Black after spending the day with the man's family when Black pulled over, the affidavit said. Black then showed the boy porn on a laptop and offered him money to masturbate in the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

The sexual abuse escalated over the years before the boy's 18th birthday to oral sex and intercourse and the encounters occurred several times at Black's home, the affidavit said.
