TULSA, Okla. –  Authorities have issued an Amber Alert for an 8-year-old Tulsa girl who was apparently snatched by a motorist from outside an apartment.

Police spokeswoman Jillian Roberson says Montserrat Aguirre was playing on a swing set at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday when a small white car pulled up and a white man got out, grabbed her and put her in the car before driving away.

She says the car may have been a Ford Focus and that the man was wearing a brown hat and may have had a beard.

Montserrat was last seen wearing a white skirt with ruffles and a pink shirt.

Police say an 8-year-old girl abducted from a playground area at the Willowbend Apartments on Sunday night was found safe and is in protective custody.

Investigators also have a suspect in custody, after a search that went well into early Monday morning.

Police say the child was playing on a swing set outside about 7:20 p.m., and a white man pulled up in a small, four-door white car, grabbed her, put her in his car and drove away, police said.

Witnesses said he was last seen heading west on East 31st Street.

Officer Jillian Roberts said the witnesses were mainly other children on the playground, but one adult was nearby and saw part of the abduction.

Police identified Michael Slatton, 33, as a person of interest late Sunday night.
Investigators from the Sapulpa Police Department attempted to contact him around 1:15 Monday morning and he took off in a silver Ford Focus.

Slatton was taken into custody about an hour later.

Slatton is a registered sex offender in Oklahoma. According to Department of Corrections records, he was incarcerated until December of last year.

There's no word on what connection, if any, Slatton has to the child.

Roberts said the girl's family said there is no reason to believe a friend or family member would have been the one to take her.

"We're going with, right now, that this is a complete stranger abduction," Roberts said.

Sapulpa officer speaks about finding kidnapping victim bound, gagged

SAPULPA, Okla. – An officer is speaking for the first time about finding a kidnapping victim bound, gagged and left alone in a wooded area.

Sgt. Jim Madden with Sapulpa police was on patrol that day along with other agencies searching for the 8-year-old girl. He told FOX23 that it was just a gut instinct to check the area where she was found.

Madden said he knew there was a small window of time to find the girl.

“I saw a sleeping bag laid out right next to the brush down the hill and immediately went for it,” Madden said.

Terrified that the person inside might not be alive, he said he slowly unzipped the bag.

“The 8-year-old female from the Amber Alert was inside and she had her eyes closed and she was being very still," Madden said.

The child was lying naked, bound and gagged inside the sleeping bag. Madden told her he was a police officer and was there to help her.

“She was pretty frightened, but she was a brave little girl,” Madden said.

Madden said that just minutes after he called for help, other agencies arrived. The girl was then taken to an ambulance after she was initially check out by paramedics.

“There was a lot of intelligence gathering and a lot of agencies put forth to make that work and I just feel fortunate to be part of that operation,” Madden said.

Michael Slatton, the suspect in the case, was arrested on charges of kidnapping, rape, child abuse and assaulting an officer.

Madden has been a police officer for 13 years but said that this case took an emotional toll on him.
