BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A father of a one-month-old baby has been jailed on child abuse charges after the infant was hospitalized with severe head trauma.
The Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit says officers responded to Northport-DCH on May 7 after getting a report on the injured child from hospital staff.
The baby was transported to Children's of Alabama with life-threatening injuries. The child had suffered multiple skull fractures and other injuries.
Investigators say they determined the child's father, 37-year-old Jay Wesley Minor, had intentionally assaulted the child.
Minor is accused of squeezing and hitting the baby with his fist at their home on Hagler-Coaling Road in Duncanville. The child's mother, Tina Minor, wasn't home at the time of the alleged assault.
Tina Minor identified the baby as Jerry Minor.
Authorities say Jay Minor has changed his story since being arrested, but they believe he became upset with his baby as it was crying, and then assaulted the child.
"The dad became frustrated with how the baby was responding to his care," Sgt. Dale Phillips, Commander of the Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide, said.
"All we'll say is the injuries appear to have come from the baby being squeezed too tightly and also being struck."
After the attack, the Tina Minor noticed the infant was acting strangely, so she took Jerry to Northport DCH. Doctors then sent the baby to Children's of Alabama hospital, where the baby is in critical condition in the ICU.
"The baby is in a daily struggle right now. These injuries are extremely life-threatening, and its just a terrible situation," Sgt. Phillips said.
Jay Minor is facing one charge of domestic violence assault and one charge of aggravated child abuse. He was placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $90,000 bond.
Investigators aren't aware of any DHR visits to the baby's home and they tell us the couple doesn't have any prior domestic violence issues.
Tina Minor spoke with FOX6 News journalist Kelvin Reynolds on Thursday. You can watch her story on FOX6 News at 5 p.m.
