Police: Wisconsin girl, 12, stabbed 19 times; friends arrested

By Jason Hanna and Dana Ford, CNN

updated 10:56 PM EDT, Mon June 2, 2014

(CNN) -- Two 12-year-old girls inspired by Internet horror stories are accused of luring a girl of the same age into a wooded area near Milwaukee before stabbing the victim 19 times and leaving her to crawl to her own rescue over the weekend.

The victim, a 12-year-old friend of the suspects, was in stable condition at a hospital Monday, two days after a bicyclist found her on along a road in Waukesha, city Police Chief Russell Jack said.

The suspects were arrested hours after the girl was found Saturday, and they were being held on preliminary charges of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

The girls were identified in a criminal complaint as Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier.

Police: Suspects inspired by Internet

They are being charged as adults and appeared in court Monday. Bail was set for each in the amount of $500,000, according to Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel.

The suspects attended the same middle school as the victim and had a sleepover at the home of one of the suspects Friday night, Jack said.

"Both suspects had a fascination with a fictitious character that often posted" to websites dealing with stories about death and horror, the police chief told reporters at a news conference.

According to the criminal complaint, the suspects had been planning the attack since February.

They first thought to kill the victim by placing duct tape over her mouth while she was sleeping and stabbing her in the neck, the complaint read.

Next, the plan was to kill her in a bathroom where there was floor drain that could make cleanup easier, it continued.

But, finally, the girls decided to do it in a park while playing a game of hide-and-seek, the complaint read.

It states: "As they left for the park ... (the victim) was walking in front of them and Geyser lifted up the left side of her while jacket and displayed the knife tucked in her waistband. Weier stated she gave Geyser a look with wide eyes and, when asked what that meant Weier stated, 'I thought, dear god, this was really happening.'"

Some of the girl's major organs were struck, but she survived.

One of the stab wounds was near her heart and she was "one millimeter away from certain death," the complaint read.

After the suspects left, the victim crawled out of the woods and onto a road, where the bicyclist found her.

According to the complaint, the victim stated: "Please help me. I've been stabbed." She was in extreme pain and could only answer questions with yes or no.

Authorities searched for the two other girls, and a sheriff's officer found them walking near Interstate 94, Jack said.

He declined to say whether the suspects had blood on their clothes, but added: "There was evidence that was readily apparent when the two were taken into custody."

That evidence included a large kitchen knife inside a purse that Geyser identified as one of her mother's old purses, according to the complaint.

Both girls spoke readily with police, the complaint said.

Attempts to contact an attorney, believed to be representing them, were unsuccessful Monday.

According to the complaint, Weier told authorities about a website known as Creepypasta Wiki, which posts horror stories. She learned about a man named Slenderman on the site. Many believe he is not real and Weier wanted to prove skeptics wrong, the complaint read.

She allegedly introduced Geyser to the site and they believed they needed to kill in order to prove their dedication to "Slenderman."

Girls Accused in Stabbing Allegedly Motivated by 'Slender Man'

WAUKESHA, Wis. June 2, 2014 (AP)

ABC US News | ABC International News

Two 12-year-old southeastern Wisconsin girls charged with trying to stab their friend to death to please a mythological creature had struggled to decide who should do the deed.

According to a criminal complaint, the girls said they had been planning to kill their 12-year-old friend for months to please Slenderman, a fictional online character.

The complaint said they invited the girl to a sleepover Friday. They planned to tape her mouth shut, stab her in the neck and run away to Slenderman's mansion.

Instead, they attacked the girl in Waukesha on Saturday, handing the knife back and forth between them before one girl held the victim down and the other stabbed her 19 times.

One girl told detectives she regretted it. The other said she was sorry.

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) — Two 12-year-old Wisconsin girls accused of stabbing their friend nearly to death in the woods to please a fictional character struggled to decide who should actually do the deed and expressed at least some regret to detectives, according to court documents.

The girls, both from Waukesha, a Milwaukee suburb, told investigators they had been planning to kill their 12-year-old friend for months to please Slenderman, a fictional demon-like creature they learned about through a horror website, according to a criminal complaint. They invited the girl to a sleepover at one of their houses on Friday and planned to duct tape her mouth while she was sleeping, stab her in the neck, put the covers over her to make it look like she was sleeping and run away to Slenderman's mansion, the complaint said.

They backed out of that plan, deciding to kill her on Saturday in a nearby park bathroom so blood would go down the drain. They convinced the girl to go to the park with them and got her into the bathroom. One of the girls handed the knife to the other but she couldn't bring herself to stab the victim, she said. She gave the knife back to the other girl but she couldn't go through with it either, the complaint said.

They went into the woods, where one girl pushed the victim down and sat on her. The girls then traded the knife back and forth between them before one of them finally tackled the victim again and began stabbing her, according to the complaint.

One girl told a detective she understood they were going to end a life and she regretted it.

"The bad part of me wanted her to die, the good part of me wanted her to live," the girl told the investigator.

The other girl told detectives they both stabbed the victim. At one point that girl said she was sorry and what she did was "probably wrong."

The girls left the victim lying in the woods. She crawled to a road where a bicyclist found her lying on the sidewalk. Police arrived and she gave them the name of one of the girls who attacked her.

Both girls were charged as adults with first-degree attempted homicide Monday in Waukesha County Circuit Court; they each face up to 60 years in prison if convicted. A court commissioner set bail at $500,000 cash per child.

"I recognize their young ages but it's still unbelievable," Court Commissioner Thomas Pieper said during one of the girls' initial court appearances Monday.

The victim suffered 19 stab wounds; one missed a major artery near her heart by a millimeter, doctors told police. She was in stable condition Monday. The court documents did not name her.

The Associated Press isn't naming either girl who is charged because at least one of their attorneys plans to pursue moving her case into juvenile court, where proceedings are closed to the public.

"It's extremely disturbing as a parent and as chief of police," Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack said at a news conference ahead of the court appearances Monday.

One of the girls' attorneys, Donna Kuchler, asked Pieper to remove reporters from the courtroom Monday because she planned to attempt to get her client waived into juvenile court, but Pieper refused. Kuchler escorted the girl's family out of the courtroom, telling reporters only that the family was horrified at what happened.

The other girl's attorney, Joseph Smith Jr., declined to comment.

Both girls are due back in court on June 11 for a status conference.

They thought they could murder her and get away with it.  She lived and thus they got caught.  That's their only regret and the only thing they are sorry for.

Man to stabbed girl: 'Who did that to you?'
2 girls charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide

UPDATED 6:08 PM EDT Jun 04, 2014
By Ashley Fantz CNN

(CNN) —"Who did that to you?" a bicyclist in Waukesha, Wisconsin, asked the 12-year-old girl he found bloodied and lying near a wooded area.

His words were captured on a recording of the 911 call he made, which has now been released.

The cyclist explained to the 911 operator that the girl told him she'd been stabbed multiple times.

"Is she awake?" the operator asked, "Is she breathing?"

"Yes, she's breathing," the cyclist said. "She says she can take shallow breaths. She's alert."

Was there anyone around, a possible assailant? the operator asked.

"I don't see anybody," the cyclist answered.

Police say they have the suspects who attacked the girl, stabbing her 19 times. They were her friends, authorities say, two other 12-year-olds: Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier.

Geyser and Weier had concocted a plan to kill their friend so that they could impress a ghoulish character called Slenderman, according to authorities.

Weier explained to police that Slenderman was the leader of a web site called creepypasta and in order to please him, a follower had to kill a person, according to a criminal complaint in the case.

In reality, Slenderman is a fictional character and Internet meme that appears in horror stories, videos and images.

"Both suspects had a fascination with a fictitious character that often posted" to websites dealing with stories about death and horror, Waukesha's police chief Russell Jack has said.

Geyser and Weier were arrested hours after the victim was discovered, according to the complaint. They have been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, according to court documents filed Monday.

The two are being charged as adults and appeared in court Monday where bail was set at $500,000 for each, Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel said.

Waukesha police Capt. Ron Oremus told CNN Wednesday that investigators are searching through digital evidence including iPads and cell phones.

Anthony Cotton, Geyser's attorney, told CNN Tuesday that he's spoken briefly with his client. She is housed at a juvenile facility for females, he said.

Her family is in "shock," the lawyer said, adding that he expected Geyser to undergo a mental evaluation.

Attempts to contact an attorney for Weier have not been successful.

The condition of the victim has been updated to fair at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Brother says sister loved Slenderman

Weier's older brother, William, told the Daily Mail Wednesday that he knew about his sister's interest in the character Slenderman.

She liked to watch online videos about the spooky character with long tentacle-like arms and a blank face, said William Weier, a makeup artist who works for a local variety show.

"If you looked at my younger sister you'd see a normal, happy 12-year-old," he told the Mail. "She's just got a couple of weird interests. Personally, I think she found Slenderman on YouTube, took an interest and then read up on it."

Anissa Weier also liked the web site creepypasta.com, her brother explained to the Mail.

Creepypasta is a play on the term "copypasta," which is derived from the keyboard action "copy-paste." Creepypasta is horror fiction written with the Web in mind and, often, comes in a style that makes it look like a news or true crime story.

On Tuesday morning, a lengthy statement about the Wisconsin case appeared on www.creepypasta.com.

The statement expressed condolences for everyone involved and stressed that the site does not condone or encourage violence in any way. But it also noted that "it's hard to justify pinning blame on an entire genre of writing."

"She loved Creepypasta, she loved the Slenderman stories, just anything a bit creepy," William Weier reportedly said. "But I don't see why it changed from dream to reality."

Planning an attack

Weier and Geyser attended the same middle school as the victim and had a sleepover at the home of one of the suspects Friday night, according to the police chief.

According to the criminal complaint, the suspects had been planning the attack since February.

They first thought to kill the victim by placing duct tape over her mouth while she was sleeping and stabbing her in the neck, the complaint says.

They also considered killing her in a park bathroom where there was a floor drain that could make cleanup easier, the complaint says.

The girls ultimately decided to carry out the attack in the park while playing a game of hide-and-seek.

"As they left for the park ... (the victim) was walking in front of them and Geyser lifted up the left side of her white jacket and displayed the knife tucked in her waistband," the complaint says. "Weier stated she gave Geyser a look with wide eyes and, when asked what that meant, Weier stated, 'I thought, dear god, this was really happening.' "

'One millimeter away' from death

The victim was stabbed near her heart, and she was "one millimeter away from certain death," the complaint says.

When the bicyclist found her, the girl pleaded, "Please help me. I've been stabbed."

She was in extreme pain and could only answer yes or no questions, the complaint says.

Authorities searched for the two other girls, and a sheriff's officer found them walking near Interstate 94, Jack said.

He declined to say whether the suspects had blood on their clothes, but added: "There was evidence that was readily apparent when the two were taken into custody."

That evidence included a large kitchen knife inside a purse, according to the complaint, which Geyser identified as one of her mother's old purses.

Family: Wisconsin stabbing victim out of hospital

Saturday - 6/7/2014, 1:20am ET

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- A 12-year-old Wisconsin girl who police say was repeatedly stabbed by two classmates trying to curry favor with a fictional horror character has been released from the hospital, the victim's parents said Friday night.

The girl narrowly survived being stabbed 19 times. A spokeswoman for the girl's family issued a statement Friday saying the girl was released from Waukesha Memorial Hospital.

"She is excited to be out of the hospital, see her pets and continue along the road to recovery. Our family is extremely grateful for the outpouring of support and love from not only the local community, but from around the nation, and the world," the statement said.

Two 12-year-old girls have been charged as adults with first-degree attempted homicide in the stabbing. Police say the girls told detectives they wanted to kill their classmate in hopes of pleasing Slender Man, a spooky character they read about on a horror website.

Police say that after stabbing the victim, the attackers left her lying in the woods. The victim crawled to a road where a bicyclist found her lying on the sidewalk.

In their statement, the victim's parents said they have kept their discussions with their daughter about the May 31 stabbing short. But they said they have asked her girl how she found the strength to crawl out of the woods.

"Her response was simple: 'I wanted to live,'" the statement said.

Doctors previously told police the victim was lucky to be alive because the knife just missed a major artery.

Police have not identified the victim, and her parents have asked friends to keep her name secret.

Anthony Cotton, an attorney for one of the girls charged in the stabbing, has said he will push to get the girl's case transferred to juvenile court, where more social services and mental health treatment would be available for her.

Wisconsin girl stabbed in 'Slenderman' case leaves hospital

(Reuters) - A Wisconsin girl stabbed 19 times in a murder plot allegedly hatched by two 12-year-old classmates to win favor with a fictional Internet character known as Slenderman, was released from the hospital on Friday, her family said in a statement.

The 12-year-old girl, whose name has not been released to protect her privacy, had been recovering at a hospital in Waukesha, Wisconsin, after the attack last Saturday morning.

"She is excited to be out of the hospital, see her pets, and continue along the road to recovery. Our family is extremely grateful for the outpouring of support and love from not only the local community, but from around the nation, and the world," the statement said.

A criminal complaint alleged that two girls, charged as adults with attempted murder in the stabbing, said they hoped killing their classmate would please the shadowy, blank-faced Slenderman.

Following a sleepover the previous night, the girls led the victim into a wooded area nearby, then stabbed her, the complaint said. The two had been crafting the plan for months, according to court documents.

Doctors treating the victim said she had wounds to her liver, pancreas and stomach. The knife missed a major artery by the heart by only a millimeter, the criminal complaint said.

The victim's family said it had kept discussion about the attack to a minimum, but the girl when asked how she was able to crawl out of the woods, answered: "I wanted to live."

The family has raised over $33,000 on a fundraising website to help cover the costs of medical treatment.

Other "Slenderman" news ...

13-year-old Ohio girl stabs mother in 2nd ‘Slenderman’ attack

By Jessica Chasmar-The Washington Times
Monday, June 9, 2014

An Ohio teen attacked her mother with a knife in the second stabbing linked to the fictional horror character “Slenderman.”

A Hamilton County mother, who asked to not be identified, told a local NBC affiliate that her 13-year-old daughter became obsessed with the Internet meme before she stabbed her.

“I came home one night from work, and she was in the kitchen waiting for me, and she was wearing a mask, a white mask,” the mother told the station. “She was someone else during the attack.”

The mother suffered multiple minor injuries, including a puncture wound on her back. The girl is facing charges as a juvenile.

The attack comes after two, 12-year-old Wisconsin girls brutally stabbed their friend 19 times as a sacrifice to the mythical character. The mother said after hearing of the Wisconsin attack that she began to suspect her daughter was under the same influence, the NBC affiliate reported.

“We found things that she had written and she made reference to Slender Man. She also made references to killing,” the mother said. “She even created a world for Slenderman in the game Minecraft.”

A spokeswoman for Slenderman creator Eric Knudsen and an administrator for creepypasta.wikia.com, where the meme was published, have apologized since the first attack and said Slenderman does not teach children to be violent.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragedy in Wisconsin, and my heart goes out to the families of those affected by this terrible act,” Mr. Knudsen said in a statement, the Associated Press reported.

Creepypasta administrator David Morales said the site clearly states the stories there are fiction and its rules bar use by anyone under 13.

“We are not teaching children to believe in a fictional monster, nor are we teaching them to be violent,” Mr. Morales said, AP reported.

This case burns me up. From the second I saw it on CNN, all I could think was BULLS@*$!!! My kids were even in the room, and they thought the whole story was ridiculous.
I think these girls simply wanted to kill someone. The ridiculous Slender Man story is nothing but an excuse. By 12 years old, you know what is fictional and what's not. It makes me so angry!

Victim in 'Slender Man' stabbing well enough for movie night with dad

June 24, 2014

A 12-year-old girl who was stabbed and nearly killed by two young classmates in an effort to appease a demonic fictional character has recovered and even attended a movie with her father, her family said Tuesday.
The young girl who was stabbed 19 times May 31  in Waukesha, Wis.,  was able to enjoy a "daddy-daughter night" out less than a month after the brutal attack.

She has a courageous heart and bravely deals with both the physical and emotional challenges since the attack. - - Statement released by the victim's family

"She has a courageous heart and bravely deals with both the physical and emotional challenges since the attack," the family wrote in a statement issued on a fund-raising website Tuesday morning. "Though many days consist of medical appointments and rehabilitation, recently she and her father enjoyed a ‘daddy-daughter night at the movies’ and thoroughly enjoyed a Disney film."

The family has raised nearly $50,000 through the gofundme.com to offset the girl's medical costs, the family said. The girl was released from the hospital on June 7.

Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, both 12, have been charged as adults in the attack on their friend and classmate. The assault on the girl was planned months in advance, and the girls told police they were trying to prove the existence of "Slender Man," an tall blank-faced Internet character with black tendrils who supposedly haunts photographs and kills children.

Geyser and Weier allegedly lured the victim into the woods for a game of hide-and-seek, then one of them held her down while the other stabbed her again and again. The young victim was left in the woods to die, but she was found by a passing biker.

A judge ordered Geyser to undergo a competency hearing. Both are being held in lieu of $500,000 and are expected to return to court on July 2.

The victim's family released two photos of the girl's room. One shows a canopy of "get well" messages that were sent in as part of the "Hearts For Healing" social media movement that began on Twitter after the attack. The other is a photo of the girl, from the neck down, holding a card that simply says "thank you."

"We simply cannot put into words how grateful we are for the prayers, packages and heartfelt messages," the statement read. "We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support."

I don't think for one second that this attempted murder had anything whatsoever to do with "Slender Man".  They're just evil little sociopaths who wanted to experience the "thrill" of a kill.

They don't need to be released out on society.

Exactly. By 12 years old, most kids have been thinking abstractly for 4 years. They know what's real and what isn't. I bet they were SHOCKED to find they would be tried as adults. I think a lot of kids think it's okay to commit a crime because they'll just go to juvie until they're 18.

'Slender Man' Stabbing: Morgan Geyser And Anissa Weier To Appear In Court

WEST BEND, Wis. -- Two 12-year-old Wisconsin girls accused of stabbing and nearly killing a classmate to curry favor with a fictional online character are due back in court.

Attorneys are expected to discuss the results of a mental health evaluation of one of the girls in court Wednesday. Defense attorney Anthony Cotton says he believes his client is mentally ill. A court commissioner agreed to have a state doctor examine her.

Cotton says he also has hired a second doctor to evaluate the girl.

A motion for prosecutors to turn over evidence to the other girl's public defender also is on the agenda.

Court documents say the girls plotted for months to kill their friend to please the specter known as Slender Man. The 12-year-old victim has been recovering at home.

'Slenderman' victim, 12, receives a Purple Heart

Robin A. Webb, USA
Today 10:54 a.m. MST July 22, 2014

A 12-year-old Wisconsin girl who continues to recover at home after being stabbed 19 times by two friends in the so-called 'Slenderman' case was sent a priceless gift from an anonymous American hero.

The girl's family set up a Facebook page shortly after the brutal attack two months ago. They asked people to send handmade hearts -- made from paper, fabric, felted wool -- that would be hung in her bedroom so "she may be reminded that the power of love is greater than all else." They requested the hearts be purple, the girl's favorite color.

Last month, a purple heart of a different sort arrived -- the kind given to veterans wounded in combat. According to the family, the Purple Heart arrived with a card that read, "The Only Heart I Could Find – Be Strong." The sender sent the medal anonymously.

The family is hoping that the veteran may come forward, either privately or publicly, so they can deliver their personal thanks for the gift.

According to a post on the family's "Hearts for Healing" Facebook page, Wisconsin Secretary of Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos was informed of the gesture and he stated:

"Those who receive this military recognition do so because they have been wounded or killed in an action against an enemy of the United States or as a result of an act of any such enemy or opposing armed forces. American service men and women are also moms and dads, uncles and aunts – brothers and sisters. It does not surprise me that a decorated veteran unselfishly gave this amazingly brave and courageous little girl something from his or her heart."

The girl sustained stab wounds to the arms, legs and torso and was left for dead in the May 31 attack, allegedly carried out by two other 12-year-olds. Police reported that the young victim managed to crawl for help and was found by a passerby.

The attackers have been charged with attempted homicide. The girls told authorities that Slenderman required them to perform the crime in order to curry favor with him. The girls are being held in a juvenile detention center. Slenderman, or Slender Man, is popular on some Internet horror sites and has inspired fan-fiction postings.

The mythical adult male figure is said to wear a dark suit and have no face. His arms and legs are longer than normal and he can extend them at will, according to postings on the creepypasta.wikia.com website. He appears to target children, often for kidnapping, according to the site.

After the attack, Eric Knudsen, the creator of Slenderman, said in a statement that he was "deeply saddened by the tragedy in Wisconsin and my heart goes out to the families of those affected by this terrible act."

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - A Wisconsin girl, one of two 12-year-olds accused of luring a friend into the woods and repeatedly stabbing her to please a fictional Internet character known as Slenderman, is not mentally competent to stand trial, a judge ruled on Friday.

The judge ordered the girl, Morgan Geyser, to be committed to state's department of health services.

A psychologist who examined Geyser said at the competency hearing the girl may have trouble understanding her crime.

"She presently lacks substantial mental capacity to rationally and factually understand her charge and be a meaningful assistance in her defense," psychologist Brooke Lundbohm testified.

Geyser and Anissa Weier have been charged as adults with first-degree attempted homicide. They are accused of stabbing their classmate 19 times in late May in Waukesha, a western suburb of Milwaukee, the morning after a sleepover. The victim survived the stabbing.

Geyser said during her evaluation that she sees unicorns, has mind control powers and believes Voldemort, a villain in the "Harry Potter" book series, gave her directions and Slenderman is real, Lundbohm testified.

The girls told investigators they stabbed their friend, also 12, to impress Slenderman, a tall, fictional bogeyman popular on the Internet that they insisted was real, according to a criminal complaint.

A status hearing for Weier also was held on Friday.

Wisconsin law requires attempted homicide cases involving suspects at least 10 years old to begin in adult court before attorneys can ask a judge to move the case to juvenile court.

The girls face up to 60 years in prison if convicted as adults of attempted homicide. They could be incarcerated to age 25 if they are convicted as juveniles under Wisconsin law.

The girl they stabbed spent six days in the hospital, according to her family. Her identity has not been made public.
