Trial of man charged in infant's death to start

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - The long-delayed murder trial of a Shreveport man charged with beating his infant daughter to death is expected to begin Monday.

The Times reports jury selection in the capital murder trial of 24-year-old Samuel Jordan is expected to take a week.

Jordan was arrested in December 2008 and indicted on a charge of first-degree murder for killing 9-week-old Lyrica T. Kennedy.

Jordan brought the infant to WK Pierremont Health Center in critical condition because she was having trouble breathing. Doctors determined the child was suffering from severe head injuries and declared her brain dead. The child was pronounced dead six days later.

Kennedy's mother told police her daughter had been staying with Jordan for the previous seven days, investigators said. He was questioned and later booked into jail.

CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Accused baby killer Samuel Jordan has been found guilty as charged.

KSLA News 12 has confirmed that it took a Caddo Parish jury just about 90 minutes Saturday night to return with a unanimous verdict of guilt against Jordan.


Prosecutors have said they are seeking the death penalty.

Police charged Jordan, 24, with murder back in 2008 when his 9-week-old daughter, Lyrica T. Kennedy, died after fighting for her life for nearly a week.

It was Jordan who took the infant, suffering from severe head injuries, to Willis-Knighton Pierremont, police said at the time. The child was pronounced dead six days later.

The penalty phase of this trial begins at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Opening arguments in the penalty phase of Samuel Jordan's murder trial began Sunday just hours after a Caddo Parish jury returned a guilty verdict on Saturday night. 

Jordan, 24, was charged with murder back in 2008 when his 9-week-old daughter, Lyrica T. Kennedy, died after fighting for her life for nearly a week. Jordan was accused of shaking the infant.

A Caddo Parish jury deliberated for just about 90 minutes before returning the guilty verdict.

Thus far on Sunday, both the state and the defense have made arguments.

The state brought testimony from Caddo Parish Sheriff's deputies who say that Jordan would repeatedly threaten to kill them, kill their mothers. Jordan would spit on them, say the deputies who testified.

The attorney for the district attorney's office said to the jury, "I'm going to ask you to return the death penalty for Mr. Jordan."

Jordan's defense team doesn't dispute that Jordan killed the 9-week-old baby, but they told the jury that they would supply the why behind why he did it.

"You're going to learn why he did what he did to his own child. We're asking you to punish him but to spare his life."

The defense also plans to prove that he has a "poisoned brain" as a result of his biological mother using drugs and alcohol while he was in the womb.

Samuel Jordan sentenced to life in prison

 Samuel Lee Jordan, convicted last month by a Caddo Parish jury of first degree murder for the death of eight-week-old Lyrica Kennedy, was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison at hard labor without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence. Judge Mike Pitman issued the sentence.

Prosecutors were calling for the death penalty in the murder case but last week, the jury hearing Jordan's case became deadlock.The deadlock resulted in the automatic life in prison sentence.
