Detroit — Relatives of two missing children, whose mother’s dismembered body was found inside a vacant home, continued frantically searching Tuesday for the 6-year-old girl and 6-month-old boy, along with local, state and federal police.
More than three weeks after their disappearance, Detroit police began working with Michigan State Police and the FBI in hopes of finding 6-year-old Kaylah Hunter and her 6-month-old brother, Kristian Justice.
“Our family is passing out fliers, and talking to people in the neighborhood, asking if they’ve seen anything,” said Christene Doughty, sister of Alicia Fox, the 27-year-old woman whose dismembered body was found in a home on Penrod Street Monday night by family members who were searching for her. “We haven’t heard anything new, unfortunately.”
Fox was last heard from June 3, when she sent a text message to Kaylah’s father, Kevin Hunter, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said. Police didn’t begin investigating the disappearance until Friday because it wasn’t listed as a missing person case, Craig said, adding that Fox and her children had simply moved out of their home on Ardmore Street.
“The alarms did not go off initially,” Craig said. “It was a mother who left (a) residence who took her children. We are doing everything we can to find the children.”
Bill Canty, 56, who lives across the street from the vacant home where Fox’s body was found, said several relatives returned around 7 p.m. Monday to search for Fox after a woman who lived on Penrod told them there was suspicious activity involving a U-Haul truck outside a vacant house about two weeks ago.
“We saw a U-Haul at the house also,” Canty said. “But we figured maybe the house has been empty 14 years, so we thought maybe someone was moving furniture out or someone was scrapping. We didn’t think nothing about it.”
The family searched the backyard of the property until a man who described himself as Fox’s uncle went inside to search the basement.
“He came out and just said, ‘There’s a dead body down there,’ ” Canty said. “He seen one of the doors was ajar and he saw a piece of trash or something on top of her and when he moved it he saw two legs cut off at the knees of a light-skinned female.”
The front door was still open at the abandoned dwelling Tuesday. Just inside the doorway, a hanging statuette of an angel leads into a cluttered room full of rubbish including sneakers and a couch. The house, surrounded by knee-high weeds, was one of only two on the block.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy, identified the body as Fox’s and determined the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, including two to the head. The body was intact, according to the autopsy.
“It is in a state of severe decomposition,” said Mary Mazur, spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office. “Tattoos on the body of Alicia Fox were key to her formal identification. Many times, tattoos have helped in identifying bodies and body parts of individuals involved in crimes.”
The vacant house is nearly eight miles from where Fox was last seen with her two children by her mother on May 24 in the 18400 block of Ardmore, the chief said. Fox recently moved out of the home where she lived with her children and, until “very recently,” with her husband, Erin Justice.
Police became involved on Friday when Hunter submitted a missing person report for Fox and her children.
“There is no indication it was involuntary,” Craig said about Fox leaving the residence. “When we’re talking about a domestic situation someone leaves their home and messaging back and forth. There is no indication something is wrong. It doesn’t mean they are missing. Sometimes people will voluntarily leave the location to get away from their spouse or significant other ... it’s any number of factors.”
Neighbors, including Phillip Blunt who used to cut the family’s grass, said Fox’s husband was seen loading up a truck outside the family home about a week ago.
“He was down there for two days with a small U-Haul truck,” Blunt said.
Neighbors said they weren’t aware of any domestic disputes.
Craig said police contacted both Hunter and Justice, who are cooperating with the investigation. No one is in custody.
Detroit police described Fox’s daughter, Kaylah, as 4-foot-7, 65 pounds, with a light complexion and black hair in cornrows. Police did not release a physical description of the baby Kristian Justice.
Fox drove a burgundy Chevrolet Impala bearing the Michigan license plate CCR1286, according to police.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department’s Criminal Investigations at (313) 596-1240.

(WXYZ) - Detroit Police say they have arrested a second suspect in the case of a murdered Detroit mother and two missing children.
During a 10:30 a.m. press conference Thursday, Detroit Chief of Police James Craig said the second suspect is a 27-year-old male who will be charged with Accessory After the Fact.
The father of one of the missing children has been arrested in Georgia.
Erin Justice was taken into custody yesterday, just two days after the mother of his missing child was found dead. Chief Craig indicated that Detroit investigators are in Georgia, questioning Justice in order to find out more information about the childrens' whereabouts.
Sources tell 7 Action News they believe 27-year-old Alicia Fox was killed in a house on Ardmore Street, located on Detroit's west side. Michigan State Police were at the house overnight and detected blood inside.
Police say Fox lived in the Ardmore house with her two kids, 6-year-old Kaylah Hunter and 8-month-old Kristian Justice, before she was killed.
The mother's body was found Monday at an abandoned home on Penrod Street, according to police.
Fox was last seen with her two children leaving the house in late May.

ATLANTA (WJBK) -- The father of one of two missing Detroit children has been arrested in Atlanta, Ga.
According to Fulton County, Ga. jail records, the FBI arrested Erin Justice in Atlanta late Wednesday in connection with two missing Detroit children and the death of their mother. This comes after he was questioned Tuesday and released, after coming forward voluntarily.
Justice is charged with being a fugitive from justice. Police tell FOX 2 that he is awaiting extradition to Detroit, where he will likely face additional charges. A news conference is expected at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Justice is father to missing 8-month-old Kristian Justice. He was also husband to Alicia Fox, whose body was found shot in an abandoned home on Detroit's west side earlier this week.
Both of Fox's children, 6-year-old Kaylah Hunter and 8-month-old Kristian Justice, are still missing.
Investigators turned their attention Wednesday to a vacant home on Ardmore Street, near where Alicia Fox lived with her family. On Monday night Fox's body was found in an abandoned home on Penrod Street on the city's west side.

A Detroit Woman Found Murdered And Her Kids Are Missing But Police Refuse Amber Alert [VIDEO]
Jun 11, 2014
By SkyyHook, Contributing Editor
This story is beyond horrific. We can’t imagine what we would do if we were in this family’s shoes. A 27 -year-old woman Alicia Fox was found murdered in a vacant home in Detroit. That in and of itself is awful for any family to endure. But the young woman’s 6-year-old daughter and 8-month-old son are missing…and the police are refusing to initiate an Amber Alert for them.
Take a look at the story via FOX 2 in the video below.
It’s truly sad that we even have to wonder or flat ask…if those beautiful babies were not children of color…would more not have been attempted on the part of police? What in the world does it take to get an Amber Alert issued…and for goodness sake isn’t this the type of thing an Amber Alert was created for? This question MUST be addressed in the coming days.
Again, police are looking for Fox’s burgundy Chevy Impala, which has a license plate of CCR 1286.
Somebody, somewhere, knows something….these kids are young. Hopefully they are still among us somewhere, and if they are… they must be afraid or at the very least confused. They have a terrified family who needs information. There is more than one crime being committed here. Obviously you have the initial crime, but then you also have the crime of keeping silent. Whomever knows the location of these children and continues to refuse to speak up is also guilty.
So, if you think you have even the slightest bit of info…please contact authorities. This isn’t about snitching…it’s about helping two babies find their way back to the loving arms of their heartbroken family members. Imagine if it were your daughter and son out there and do the right thing…do what you would want someone else to do for you and yours. Call Detroit police at 313-596-1240 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP if you know anything. Every little tiny bit of information is helpful.
Please let’s put an end to this family’s suffering and anguish today so they can begin the long arduous process of healing.

Volunteers search for missing children Tuesday

DETROIT (WJBK) - It has been one week since a Detroit mother was found murdered in an abandoned home. Since then police, family and hundreds of volunteers have been searching for her two young children.
Now, the question remains, where are 8-month-old Kristian Justice and 6-year-old Kaylah Hunter?
Authorities searched an abandoned house near Grove and Strathmoor streets Monday evening. They also went door to door to speak with neighbors.
"He just said what they were doing out here, you know, searching for the children. He said they got a tip. He didn't know if it was a hoax or not, but they had a tip that the children [were] in this area," says one of the neighbors.
Police have been searching for the kids since their mother, Alicia Fox, was found dead in an abandoned house on Penrod Street on Detroit's west side. Her body was badly decomposed.
Police believe her husband 28-year-old Erin Justice, father to her youngest child, killed Fox in late May and then asked his childhood friend, Timothy Jones, to help cover up the crime.
Jones was arraigned in 36th District Court facing a felony charge of accessory after the fact, but Justice has yet to make a local court appearance. He fled to Georgia and is fighting extradition back to Detroit. He's charged with several felonies including first-degree murder.
His next court appearance is scheduled for June 25th.
Meanwhile, police in Detroit keep searching.
A family member says volunteers are invited to help search for the children Thursday, June 17. The search group will meet at 10 a.m. at Joy Road and Trinity Street where they will search grids three and four of Rouge Park.
Volunteers are asked to wear pink and white or pink and black.

Why Wasn’t An Amber Alert Issued For Missing Detroit Kids Whose Mom Was Murdered?
June 18, 2014 1:02 PM
DETROIT (WWJ) – Some volunteers who’ve been searching Detroit’s Rouge Park for two missing children are demanding to know why an Amber Alert hasn’t been issued.
“I’ve seen them issue Amber Alerts for less than this,” search volunteer Sharon Mitchel told WWJ’s Marie Osborne. “And the Amber Alert is a waste of taxpayers’ money because this is the worst case scenario that an Amber Alert needs to be issued — and I am so upset right now.”
Both Detroit Police Chief James Craig and a spokesman for the Michigan State Police have said 6-year-old Kaylah Hunter and 8-month-old Kristian Justice did not fit any of the four criteria needed to issue an Amber Alert.
According to State Police, an Amber Alert is only issued when “an endangered missing person” under 17 years of age is reported to law enforcement, and one or more of the following circumstances exist:
○ The child suffers from a severe mental or physical disability that greatly impairs the child’s ability to care for him/herself.
○ The child is a victim of stranger or acquaintance kidnapping. (MCL 750.349) Stranger kidnapping is defined as a child being taken against his/her will by a stranger. Acquaintance kidnapping is defined as a child being taken against his/her will by an acquaintance of the child or the child’s family.
○ The child is in the company of a person who has a confirmed criminal history of child abuse/neglect, sexual assault, domestic assault, a crime involving the victimization of children, or has made statements of intent to harm the missing child, or is suicidal.
○ The child has been abducted by a non-custodial parent whose parental rights have been terminated.
——————–
Mitchel believes these children fit that first requirement. “You’re telling me that a 6-year-old and an infant are able to care for themselves?” she said.
State police say they’ve repeatedly publicly addressed the Amber Alert issue, and have properly followed protocol in this investigation.
That answer, however, does not satisfy Mitchel, who said time is running out to find these kids.
“State police have failed the family…” she said. “This mother is not here to speak for them, so it’s up to us in the community to speak for those children.”
The children’s mother, 27-year-old Alicia Fox, was found shot dead in an abandoned home last week. Now, her husband, 26-year-old Erin Justice — who is Kristian’s father — is charged with murder.
He’s in Atlanta, Georgia fighting extradition. A second Detroit man, 27-year-old Timothy Jones, was arraigned last Friday on a charge of accessory after the fact.
Police received a tip that the children might be found in Rouge Park — which is the largest park in the city of Detroit — but law enforcement and volunteers have found no sign of the kids.
Chief Craig has said investigators have no idea if they’re dead or alive.

It's been nearly a month since anyone has seen infant Kristian Justice and his sister, 6-year-old Kaylah Hunter, the children of Alicia Fox, a woman who was found murdered in an abandoned home.
Her husband, the father of the children, Erin Justice, is now locked up in Atlanta, accused of murdering Fox, but the kids are still out there somewhere.
Family members say they now have a new plan they are hoping will make a difference.
"We're doing all we can," said Brenda Fields, Fox's aunt. "We don't care. We're out asking people to sign the petition for Kaylah and Kristian. We plan to present it to the Michigan State Police."
The family is soliciting signatures for a petition to get an Amber Alert for the two children. The brother and sister have been missing for three weeks now.
"We need 2,500 signatures. Right now we're short about 800," Fields said.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, a special task force is trying to find the kids, following up on every single lead that comes in.
"When they follow up on a tip, we go right behind them," Fields said.
Sources told Local 4 that police have received hundreds of calls. Some callers claim they've spotted the kids, but the reports all turn out to be false.
Detectives have been grilling Justice and interviewing family members and witnesses. Sources say investigators believe the kids may be somewhere familiar to Justice. That's why family members want the Amber Alert. They don't want anyone to forget that the children are still out there.
"In my heart I believe they're still alive," Fields said. "We've been out searching for them because we don't know what else to do. And we don't want to sit down and do nothing."

Family wants Amber Alert issued for missing children, start online petition

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Family members of two missing children in Detroit hope spreading the word online can help bring back their children.
The search remains active. They are still posting flyers of Kaylah Hunter and Kristian Justice, but family members are now hoping an online petition can push for that Amber Alert they’ve desperately asked for.
It’s been the question so many loved ones have been asking since Kaylah and Kristian’s mother Alicia Fox was found dead in the basement of an abandoned home two weeks ago. Fox’s husband, Erin Justice was arrested in Georgia, charged with first degree murder, and now awaits extradition.
But the question remains; where are the kids? Family members hope a petition on change.org can help prompt Michigan State Police to finally issue that Amber Alert.
"What an Amber Alert is for is to have the public be the eyes and ears for police in a specific area and specific time frames where this occurs," said Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw. "This individual case doesn't meet that criteria."
Michigan State Police says despite the case not meeting Amber Alert criteria, a number of state and federal agencies are working to spread the word and find the children.
"The children were missing for a considerable amount of time before police were notified," said Shaw. "We usually like to put out the alert within three hours time frame because that's the most important time, the most effective time."

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - There's new information regarding the missing children of murdered mother, Alicia Fox. A suspect behind bars, charged as an accessory after the fact, is telling police he can direct them to the children.
Click on the video player to watch Ron Savage's report.
The news came Sunday, the day a neighborhood group organized a search for the children. Police believe Alicia Fox, 23, was shot and killed in her home on Ardmore in Detroit around the end of May. Her body was discovered on Penrod June 3. Her two children, Kayla, 6, and Kristian, 8 months, have never been found. Police arrested Fox's husband Erin Justice, 28, in Georgia and charged him with murder. Timothy Jones, 27, was also arrested in Detroit. Police believe he helped Justice clean up the bloody crime scene and bury Fox's body. Now, Fox 2 is learning Jones is telling deputies at the Wayne County Jail he can direct them to the children.
Jones says Justice is responsible for the disappearance of the children, but he also insists he get a deal from authorities in exchange for the information.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's office says there's nothing to comment on and the Wayne County Sheriff also declined to comment. Minister Malik Shabazz lead a search for the children Sunday, handing out flyers and calling on anyone with information to come forward.

DETROIT (WJBK) - Little Kaylah Hunter and Kristian Justice are still missing from Detroit months after their mother, Alicia Fox, was found murdered. Now, some volunteers pray that a new discovery might be the hope the children's family has been waiting for.
The children have been missing since June. Fox's husband, Erin Justice, was arrested in Georgia and has been charged with her murder.
Police, family and volunteers have searched countless times for the children. Time has passed but two women received a message they truly believe was meant to be.
"We had gotten a tip from a person on Facebook that there was a deceased female dog on West End and Vanderbilt and there was a live white pitbull that was sitting next to the dog in the middle of the road," says Kathy Garza of the Southwest Animal Group.
The white pitbull, now called Ponder, had been abused. The Southwest Animal Group got him the medical care he needed and tried every means manageable to find his owners, when he got word from Fox's family that this dog belonged to their loved ones.
"We met up with the family and the dog, and it has been positively identified that this dog does belong to the family of Alicia Fox and the missing children," says Garza.
"The meeting the other day, there was a connection. He knew those people. It's like, 'What else do you know?'" says Lisa Tipler, also from Southwest Animal Group.
"If only dogs could talk," says Garza.
Ponder is now safe with a foster family. Fox's relatives, did not have the heart to take Ponder back, but were happy to see he was in good condition.
Detroit police have looked for a connection between where the dog was found and where the missing children could be. They have not uncovered a link, though.
Garza and Tipler say they plan to continue looking and hope to gather people to search the area where the dog was found.

Search continues for murdered mother's missing children

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -
It's been three months and the search continues for two missing children after their mother was found murdered. Saturday, volunteers including family members, spent hours searching southwest Detroit for Kayla Hunter, 6, and Kristian Justice, 8 months.
Click on the video player to watch Randy Wimbley's report.
Volunteers searched near West End and Vanderbilt near an area were Alicia Fox's pit bull was found on the loose. Fox was found murdered back in June. Her estranged husband, Erin Justice, was brought back to Michigan from Atlanta this week to face murder charges.
"We're going through bushes, trees and vacant houses," said the search organizer. "By the water, anything where we think these babies could be."
So far, there's been no sign of the children. Another search is planned for Sunday.

Witness: Detroit man said he blacked out, came to shooting wife
By Elisha Anderson, Detroit Free Press
7:33 p.m. EDT May 5, 2015
Timothy Jones—the sole witness in a court hearing Tuesday—testified a man he's known since elementary school told him what happened to a Detroit mother killed last year.
He said Erin Justice called him and asked to help find keys on Memorial Day last year. When Jones showed up, he saw three bullet holes in a wall of the home on Ardmore and the body of Justice's wife, Alicia Fox, which had been wrapped in blankets and stashed in the attic.
Fox's two children, Kaylah Hunter and Kristian Justice, who were 6 years old and 8 months old at the time, were alive when he was at the house, Jones said. The older child was outside playing and the baby was in a stroller.
Justice "killed their mother," Jones testified he was told.
When Jones asked what happened, Justice, 29, said he was arguing with Fox, blacked out, and when he came to, he was shooting, he testified.
Justice — the father of one of the children — faces charges of first-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearm in connection with Fox's death.
Justice, who was earlier deemed competent to stand trial, wore jail garb and sat silently in court during his preliminary examination before 36th District Court Judge Shannon Holmes. She ruled Justice will stand trial in Wayne County Circuit Court on the charges.
Fox had been shot six times and was discovered in an abandoned house on Penrod on Detroit's west side June 9. Her children remain missing.
Jones said when he arrived at the house of Ardmore, Justice gave him gloves.
He realized the keys they were searching for were for Fox's car and suggested they may be on Fox's body because Justice told him she was trying to "get away from him," Jones testified.
Justice took her body out of the attic to check for the keys and Jones helped him move her body back, he said.
Jones also said he saw Justice with a .40 caliber gun said he asked, "Do I believe that he can get away with it?"
Inside the house, a cigarette box had about eight shell casings in it, and Jones dumped the casings in two sewers, he said.
Jones said he was "stupid" for doing it and said he didn't help Justice after that day. Justice wanted to pay Jones and gave him a pair of expensive sunglasses and a watch, he testified.
Last week, Jones pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to a felony in connection with Fox's death, and charges of tampering with evidence and concealing a person's death were dismissed, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.
Under cross-examination, Jones said part of the plea deal required his testimony, but he said he volunteered to testify before he was charged in the case. He said he faces two to five years when he's sentenced in June.
When Justice's attorney, Gerald Karafa, asked Jones about the gloves he was given at the house, Jones said he thought it was a breaking and entering situation. Jones said he didn't call police because he was afraid what would happen to him.
Karafa said Jones' testimony wasn't credible, but Judge Holmes disagreed.
"I did find him to be believable," Holmes said.
Justice will be arraigned in Wayne County Circuit Court on May 12.
