FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) - Police have arrested a father who they believe is responsible for his infant son's death.

On Monday, Findlay EMS were dispatched to a call of a baby not breathing in the 300 block of Third Street. The baby was transported to a local hospital, where it was pronounced dead.

The baby's name was James and he was only 44 days old.

Police say investigation revealed that father Jerrod Hartman, 24, was responsible for the death. An involuntary manslaughter warrant was issued and police took Hartman into custody Friday.

The investigation is ongoing.

Hartman murder trial date scheduled

A trial date has been set for Jerrod Hartman, the Findlay man charged with murder in his infant son’s death.

Hartman, 24, was scheduled for an Aug. 4 jury trial during a brief hearing Thursday in Hancock County Common Pleas Court.

Hartman was charged with an unclassified felony of murder and a second-degree felony charge of endangering children after the Oct. 28 death of his son, James Hartman.

Police said James Hartman, 44 days old, was found dead inside a home at 321 Third St. in Findlay after sustaining multiple blunt force trauma.

Jerrod Hartman has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains free on $250,000 bond.

His attorney recently filed a motion to loosen his bond restrictions.

Hartman, who is employed by his father’s company, Tour de Force CRM, asked Judge Joseph Niemeyer allow him to leave Ohio for business trips, according to the court filing.

If permitted to do so, Hartman also requested the waiving of an 8 p.m. curfew and in-person check-ins during such trips, according to the filing.

There are 14 industry events scheduled this year outside of Findlay, according to his father, Matthew Hartman.

“It would be an extreme economic hardship on the company if Jerrod were not able to attend these events,” Matthew Hartman wrote in his affidavit.

Training a replacement would require about six to nine months, Matthew Hartman wrote.

Jerrod Hartman also asked that he be allowed to spend time alone with his brother, and visit his father on weekends in Michigan, according to the filing.

Judge Niemeyer said he will make a ruling after receiving additional information from Hartman’s attorneys and the county prosecutor’s office.
