A former Oak Island mother who had two of her infant children die within 18 months has been charged in one of their deaths.

Katherine Anne Jennings, 33, who now lives in Charlotte, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the December 2013 death of 8-month-old Luke Stephen Phillips in Oak Island.

Luke Phillips was Jennings' second infant son to die in an 18-month period. James Robert "Bo" Phillips was 4 months old when he died on June 26, 2012, according to an obituary.

James Phillips' death is not the subject of an open investigation, Oak Island Police Chief Van Eddinger said in an email.

A medical examiner found James Phillips had suffocated while sleeping with his mother in the home they shared in Oak Island, The Charlotte Observer reported. The medical examiner initially called the death an accident. State officials later changed the cause to "undetermined."

The second baby, 8-month-old Luke Stephen Phillips, was sleeping with his mother on the couch on Dec. 13, 2013, when he was found unresponsive, according to a medical examiner report. Jennings told authorities the baby had been face up in her arms before he died.

The state medical examiner's office ruled Luke's death an accident, concluding that he suffocated. Co-sleeping, the office wrote, was a contributing factor.

Jennings was arrested in Charlotte on Monday and transported to the Brunswick County jail by Oak Island detectives, Eddinger wrote. She is being held there with a bail set at $50,000.

Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David declined to comment on the case because it is pending.
