Danvers mother arraigned in child abuse case

SALEM, Mass. (WHDH) - A Danvers mother was arraigned in Salem District Court on Thursday on charges of permitting substantial injury to a child and child abandonment.

Katherine Rodriguez was arrested Wednesday night after her 4-year-old son told police that the scratches and bruises on his face were from his mom's boyfriend.

Police had responded to a hotel where the family was staying. The boy came to the door and explained the marks on his body.

Danvers police said that the couple left the boy alone in the room at the Extended Day Inn on Route 1 earlier this week.

The boy told officials that the adults hit him with a shoe. He also said that his mother's boyfriend, Christopher Delcid, put hot sauce in his mouth and then taped the mouth shut.

“When asked how he got the scratch on his cheek he indicated to officers that was the result of pulling duct tape off his mouth. Indicating that Christopher Delcid had put hot sauce in his mouth and the duct tape over his mouth as a punishment for being bad,” prosecuting attorney Lindsay Sheehan said.

Delcid has been charged with assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury and child abandonment. He is being held on $250,000 cash bail.

The judge set bail for Rodriguez at $100,000 cash.
