Final arguments in Coleman case next week
7:02 PM, Jan 21, 2011
Excerpt:
Waterloo, IL (KSDK) - With the murder trial of Christopher Coleman only weeks away, a judge has ruled that the prosecution can present two controversial issues.
Judge Milton Wharton has approved an expert who will testify to a time-of-death estimate. The expert's finding differs from what Coleman told police about the deaths of his wife and two sons.
The judge also said he would not exclude testimony that might link Coleman's handwriting to threatening messages he and his family had received.

Will interview be allowed in Coleman trial?
8:46 AM, Feb 10, 2011
Excerpt:
Waterloo, Ill (KSDK) -- The Columbia, Illinois man accused of murdering his wife and two kids is scheduled to be in court Thursday afternoon. It's the last pre-trial hearing before the capital murder trial begins later this month.
The judge will decide if jurors will be allowed to watch a recorded interview between defendant Chris Coleman and investigators. The interview took place on May 5, 2009, just hours after Coleman's wife and two children were found dead in their home.
The defense doesn't want the tape to be used in trial, arguing that Coleman was not properly given his Miranda Rights and he asked several times during the interview if he could leave.

Expert witness: Coleman's writing style is consistent with graffiti found at murder scene
BY BETH HUNDSDORFER - News-Democrat
A forensic linguist testified on Friday that e-mailed threats, threatening letters and spray-painted graffiti at the murder scene were "consistent" with documents written by murder suspect Christopher Coleman.
Circuit Judge Milton Wharton will decide whether Robert Leonard, a forensic linguist at Hofstra University in New York, will testify at Coleman's upcoming murder trial.
Leonard testified that people have certain patterns in their written words that allow a forensic linguist to determine whether documents may have the same author.

Joyce Meyer testifying in Coleman murder case
2:52 PM, Apr 6, 2011
Waterloo, IL (KSDK) - Joyce Meyer, the world renowned televangelist, arrived at a Monroe County court in Waterloo, Illinois Wednesday afternoon to give testimony in the Chris Coleman murder case.
Coleman, of Columbia, Illinois, is charged with murdering his wife and two young boys in May of 2009.
The reason Meyer is giving testimony, is because Coleman worked for Meyer as head of security. He resigned after being arrested for the crimes.
Joyce Meyer's son, Daniel, is also testifying.
The judge closed the testimony to the media.
Earlier this year, friends of Sheri Coleman (Chris Coleman's late wife) testified that Sheri told them that she had spoken to Meyer about marital problems Chris and her were having. The friends told the court that Meyer made the Colemans get marriage counseling.
The prosecution, claims Coleman killed his wife and family because he was having an affair, but could not divorce his wife due to a no divorce policy at Joyce Meyer Ministries. The prosecution claims he would have lost his job if he filed for divorce.
Today's testimony will be recorded and could be shown at trial, set to start later this month. Court documents say Meyer will be out of state during the trial.
NewsChannel 5 will have updates throughout the day on KSDK.com.

Jury selection begins Monday in Coleman trial
6:47 AM, Apr 11, 2011
Excerpt:
Waterloo, Ill (KSDK) -- Jury section begins this week in the Chris Coleman murder trial.
Coleman is accused of strangling his wife Sheri and sons Gavin and Garret in their Columbia, Illinois home in May, 2009. He has pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors say Coleman murdered his family because he was having an affair and wanted to leave his wife but his job with televangelist Joyce Meyer would have been in jeopardy if he got a divorce. Meyer and her son taped their testimony last week since they'll be out of town during the trial.
Jurors will be chosen in Pinckneyville, Illinois, but the trial will be held at the Monroe County Courthouse in Waterloo. Coleman's attorneys asked for a change of venue because of all the media coverage in the case. Instead, a judge ruled the jurors would be chosen in another county, and bused to the Monroe County Courthouse for the trial.

Questionnaire creates tension in Chris Coleman case
1:26 PM, Apr 13, 2011
Excerpt:
Perry County, Ill (KSDK) -- Day three of jury selection in the Chris Coleman murder trial included tension in the courtroom.
Coleman is accused of strangling his wife Sheri and sons Gavin and Garret in their Columbia, Illinois home in May 2009. He pleaded not guilty.
The tension is between the prosecution and the defense as they try to determine which people will be on the jury. There appears to be an issue with a lengthy questionnaire that each potential juror filled out on Monday. The questionnaire which has more than 100 questions evaluates among other things people's view of the death penalty.
Many potential jurors are testifying that the questionnaire confused them and as a result gave conflicting answers on death penalty views.
The judge told the lawyers that the questionnaire "has become an issue...supposed to be an assistance not a hindrance."

Chris Coleman attorneys agree on jury
"Before the final jurors were selected, the defense expressed concern because it said 35 to 46 of the jurors in the pool had heard about the Coleman case. They pushed again for a change of venue, but the judge denied it.
Lawyers in the case finished interviewing potential jurors on Monday. The process started last Tuesday. "

Police question Coleman about deaths, affair
1:42 PM, Apr 27, 2011
Video Report: http://www.ksdk.com/video/default.aspx?bctid=921275246001
Waterloo, Ill (KSDK) -- Murder suspect Chris Coleman showed mixed emotions while detectives interviewed him shortly after the murders of his wife and two children.
For the second day jurors watched the taped interview detective conducted at the Columbia, Illinios Police Department in May 2009. Chris was seen crying, especially when he was by himself. Over the course of several hours, there were times when he chuckled and times when he showed little emotion.
Detectives asked him about his marriage to Sheri and he said it was a good relationship, but they had talked about a divorce in November and December 2008. He said they told his boss Televangelist Joyce Meyer and got counseling.
He told investigators he thought they had a healthy relationship and that they had not argued the night before the murders. He called it "an awesome night, last night."
Coleman denied having a relationship with anyone else, but said he was talking with Tara Lintz, whom he said was a friend.
He described how Sheri felt about Lintz, of Florida.
"She was probably a little jealous here and there," Coleman said on the tape. "She told me one time when I was going to Florida, to stay away from her."
Coleman told detectives the scratches and markings he had on his arms he got a few days prior to the murders and others when he hit the gurney in the ambulance after learning about the murders.
Detectives asked Coleman what he thought happened (as to the murders). Coleman said "I don't have a clue, I wish I knew, I should have been there this morning."
Detectives told Coleman they were having trouble piecing everything together, so Coleman advised them to check for forensics, the cameras, and the DVR. It was revealed during previous hearings that the DVR was missing.
When detectives asked Coleman what he thought should happen to the person who committed the murders, Coleman said "put away, I can't even imagine..my head is spinning."
Detectives told Coleman they didn't feel like he was being honest and was not telling them something. They told him that physical evidence showed Sheri and their sons, Gavin and Garrett, were not alive before Chris left for the gym at 5:43 a.m.
"Yes they were," Coleman responded. "I don't know what to tell you...I'm telling you the truth."
Detectives continued to press Coleman and he told them he was telling the truth.
"I told you everything I got...I'm not going to make something up to make you happy," Coleman said.
Coleman also told detectives again that he was not having an affair with Lintz. That's when detectives walked out of the room. When they returned, they told Coleman that Lintz spoke with police in Florida and told them about the affair, the trip to Hawaii and that he was planning on leaving Sheri.
Coleman then told investigators, "I don't want to upset my dad. Sheri didn't know."
The jury then broke for lunch.
The jury is made up of 10 women and two men. They were selected in Pinckneyville, Illinois and are being bused 50 minutes each way for the trial.

Waterloo, IL (KSDK) - Some tense moments at the courthouse Wednesday in the Chris Coleman triple murder trial, involving Coleman's brother and a detective who was on the witness stand.
As court was letting out for the day, U.S. Marshal Justin Barlow stepped down from the witness stand and looked at Coleman's brother, Brad, and said something to the effect of, "Are you okay? You need something?" The statement appeared to put Brad Coleman on the spot, who seemed surprised.
After the courtroom cleared out, Barlow had the bailiffs call Brad Coleman back in to the courtroom and confronted him, saying he wasn't going to stand for any threats against him or his family.
Barlow is a former Columbia, Illinois police detective who interviewed Chris Coleman on the day he was accused of killing his wife and two sons. Barlow said as he stepped down from the witness box, he saw Brad Coleman mouth the words, "you're dead' to him.
The judge then called all of the attorneys, Coleman's brother and Barlow all back in to the courtroom. He swore both Barlow and Brad Coleman in and told him he would not tolerate any gestures of any kind, and said that he was in danger of being in contempt of court and getting arrested.
Brad Coleman insisted the whole thing was a misunderstanding, and in fact he and Barlow shook hands, but you could tell the former Columbia detective was upset by what he believes he saw.
The judge said he would be instructing the bailiffs to keep an eye on Brad Coleman.

Chris Coleman's mistress testifies at murder trial

Waterloo, IL (KSDK) - A key witness in the Chris Coleman murder trial, the suspect's mistress, took the stand Thursday afternoon.
Tara Lintz was spotted leaving a hotel and arriving at the Monroe County courthouse just after noon. She testified under subpoena.
The prosecution claims Coleman killed his family so he could be with Lintz and feared he could lose his job as a bodyguard for televangelist Joyce Meyer if he got a divorce. During previous court hearings, it was revealed that Lintz told investigators that Chris told her he was going to give his wife, Sheri, divorce papers on May 5, 2009.
Sheri, and their two sons, Gavin and Garrett, were found dead that same day.
Coleman admitted to detectives in a taped interview after the murder that was shown to the jury on Wednesday, that he was having an affair with Lintz, but that Sheri did not know.
In court Thursday, Lintz testified that she had been having an ongoing affair with Chris Coleman. The two would meet up whenever he traveled for work with Joyce Meyer Ministries. Lintz said the two planned on getting married, and they had even bought promise rings, which they would wear when together. Lintz wore her promise ring to court.
Lintz was friends with Sheri Coleman in high school. She (Lintz) first met Chris Coleman at a Joyce Meyer event in Florida, after Sheri recommended she go watch.
Lintz said she had not spoken with Chris Coleman since May 2009.

Naked Photos and the Admission of an Affair
April 27, 2011 8:33 PM by Carol Daniel and BND reporter Beth Hundsdorfer
The Chris Coleman triple murder trial enters it’s fourth day Thursday. Wednesday, jurors heard Coleman admit to a sexual relationship with Tara Lintz, his wife’s best friend in high school and to sending her nude photos of himself on a company cell phone that belonged to Joyce Meyer Ministries.
Belleville News Democrat reporter Beth Hundsdorfer reports, during the police interrogation video, jurors saw Coleman initially portray Lintz as a family friend, calling her his wife’s number one Facebook fan. Coleman said that he and Sheri had been having marital problems and he had been talking to Tara a lot lately. He said that Sheri Coleman could get a little bit jealous at times.
It was only after Columbia Police detective Justin Barlow and Illinois State Police Sgt. Dave Bivens told Coleman that Lintz, who lives in Florida, told St. Petersburg homicide detectives that the pair were having an affair and that Chris Coleman had sent nude photos of himself to Lintz on his cell phone, that he admitted to a sexual relationship with her.
Hundsdorfer says, Coleman, dressed in a shirt, tie and black pants, watched the video intently and didn’t take any notes.
At one point, an hour into the video questioning Hundsdorfer says Sgt. Bivens and Detective Barlow tell Coleman, “We know the who, what, when and where but we don’t know the why.” They added, “You can do the right thing by your kids by telling us the why.”
While Coleman never appeared to flinch, the detectives continued, “Garrett and Gavin didn’t deserve what happened to them.” The detectives told Coleman that he knew it, the detectives knew it and everyone out there knew it and he should try to make it right.”
Coleman told detectives, “I told you everything I know, I’m telling the truth. I’m telling you everything I know.”
Today, the defense team begins it’s cross examination of detective Barlow. On the stand briefly at the end of the day, Barlow talked about what Coleman didn’t say during the questioning. He said Coleman never asked how Sheri and the boys died and didn’t bring up the fact that he had video surveillance of his home until well into the questioning. Barlow said Coleman never said in the beginning, “Check my video.”
And when will Coleman’s mistress take the stand? Hundsdorfer says Tara Lintz is scheduled to testify Thursday but because the video went so long, her testimony might be pushed to Friday although she is supposed to be in town already.

Re: GARETT and GAVIN COLEMAN - (2009) / Convicted: Father Chris Coleman - Columbia IL
Chris Hayes on Fox2
The following is a near complete transcription of Thursday April 28th testimony of Tara Lintz. I’m not a court reporter, and while I write furiously, I’m writing with pen an paper, thus unable to transcribe word for word. The following is accurate, but not directly quoted unless you see “quotes.” [Anything in brackets like this is an observation].
The State called Tara Lintz.
[The Courtroom quieted. Some people in public seating nudged their neighbors. We could hear loud clacks of heels strike the floor as Lintz approached the courtroom. The Court swore her in. Lintz took a long, soft & friendly look at Chris Coleman. Coleman looked back at her with a peaked complexion. He appeared to swallow].
[Prosecutor Kris Reitz approached and asked a series of questions, to which Tara Lintz gave the following answers].
Lintz said she works at Derby Lane.
Lintz confirmed she knew Sheri Coleman and they were best friends in High School.
Lintz said she stayed in contact with Sheri and met Chris Coleman when he was in Quantico, Virginia.
Lintz said her relationship with Chris Coleman’s became “more than a friendship” in December 2008.
Lintz said she went to a Joyce Meyer Ministries conference at the suggestion of Sheri Coleman.
Kris Reitz asked, “Did you see Chris.”
Lintz responded, “I sure did.” (enthusiastically)
Lintz said she and Chris Coleman became “physical” in mid-December (she backed up to say they began talking more the month before). They became physical in Orlando when Chris Coleman dropped off Joyce Meyer for a vacation cruise. She described Coleman coming by her hotel, staying the night once, before going somewhere else. Lintz said they stayed in touch by telephone and texts “all the time. Constantly.” (Lintz repeated this quote several times to the point that Reitz said it for her once). She said they communicated this way “all the time, constantly” up to May 5, 2009.
Lintz said Coleman “professed his love often” and added that she returned those words.
She said they made more plans
--Arizona for a Joyce Meyer Ministry conference (Tara said she went to Chris Coleman’s room. Kris Reitz asked, “Did you have sex.” Lintz answered lightheartedly, “probably.”
--Hawaii, April 2009 for a Joyce Meyer vacation (Tara said she stayed in his room where they had sex).
Reitz asked, “Did the defendant indicate he was having sex with Sheri.”
Lintz responded, “He and Sheri both said they hadn’t had sex as of December, 2008.”
Reitz, “So they had no sex the entire year of 2009.”
Lintz, “Yes.”
Tara Lintz indicated Chris Coleman slept in the basement a lot (on a couch) because he took pics of himself at night from his home and sent them to Tara (in the Spring of 2009).
Lintz agreed with Reitz that the Colemans were planning a Disney trip. Tara said she expressed unhappiness about the trip and discussed with Chris that he cancel. Chris reportedly said they wouldn’t get their money back, so Tara found a way around it. Tara described how she and Chris called Disney (on a 3 way call). Tara said she identified herself as Sheri and found a way to cancel and get a refund. She said Chris Coleman then explained to Sheri how they could cancel. Sheri then reportedly postponed the trip, but still wanted to go.
Tara Lintz described how she and Chris Coleman discussed marriage. She said they planned it, but the divorce had to happen first. She said they both got promise rings and Tara said she was wearing her ring today. Tara said Chris told her he would divorce Sheri and he was having the papers drawn up. She said Chris told her he would pick up the papers 5-4-09 and said he’d ask Sheri to sign that day. He did not do it. Tara said Coleman told her there was a delay because of a typo, the lawyer asked for a correction, and they’d be ready May 5, 2009 (the morning police discovered the stranglings).
Kris Reitz asked, “Did you have future plans?”
Lintz, “Yes,” a cruise in June or July to St. Thomas. Tara said that Sheri didn’t know because Chris got a new credit card. She said she texted Chris constantly May 4, 2009. That night when Chris was working out, Tara and Chris were texting and Sheri was texting Chris too. Tara said she and Chris remained in touch that night even while Chris was home (and she said that was common).
Reitz, “When did he go to bed?”
Lintz, “10:30 pm.” (Lintz said she was at karaoke in Florida at the time.)
Tara Lintz said they had no further contact until Chris’ father Ron Coleman called her May 5th at 10 a.m. She said Chris Coleman texted her later while he was being interrogated. Lintz said she was surprised police didn’t take his phone.
Reitz, “Did you know what happened?”
Lintz, “I already knew. I asked if he was okay” (She seems to be responding that she “already knew” because of Ron Coleman’s call).
Lintz said Coleman called her two days later while Illinois Detectives where at her parent’s Florida home. She answered “St. Louis Police are here.” She said Chris Coleman responded, “Oh really, interesting.” Tara said one of them said to the other “They’re looking for motive,” (She couldn’t remember if it was her or Chris). She described it as a “short call” and that they had no more communication (ever).
Defense Attorney Bill Margulis cross examination. “Were you aware of threats to the defendant?”
Lintz, “Yes,” (adamantly). She described a threat one and half years earlier and believed there to be 4 total (the Court record reflects 3). Lintz said she had copies. During additional questioning, Lintz confirmed she received sex texts from Chris’s brother Keith Coleman. She also confirmed a facebook marriage proposal from Sheri’s relative Mario Weiss. Then she said she’d been on a cruise with a man named Jesse.
Margulis, “You had access to the defendant’s credit cards.”
Lintz, “Yes.”
Margulis, “Did St. Peters Police Detectives tell you they thought Chris did it?”
Lintz, “Yes. A LOT. Lots!”
Tara Lintz also confirmed St. Pete Police took her phone.
She abruptly walked off the stand.

Ya did good! Thank you for reporting this. It just dumbfounds (is that a word?) me how people can be so evil. Poor Sheri and her dear boys. IMO Tara Lintz should be out of her mind with guilt and horror over the ramifications of her betraying her friend and of encouraging a man to leave his family. How can she live with that? And the "court reporting" indicates she thinks it's funny. And what a lily-liver excuse for a man Chris Coleman is. The trial is on-going so I'll say "even if he didn't murder his family" how could he betray his wife like that and disappoint his sons by not going to Disney World because he was obsessed by his skanky mistress. Sorry, this whole story is upsetting.
