Metro Police issued a warrant Monday for the arrest of a teenager accused in the fatal beating last week of a 16-month-old boy.
The warrant charges 18-year-old Jocquise Coleman with two counts of
child abuse with substantial bodily harm and child neglect with
substantial bodily harm.
Police said Coleman was taking care of 16-month-old Lamaj Terry at
an apartment complex at 5150 Spyglass Hill Drive while his mother went
to work on Wednesday, the warrant stated. The toddler's mother told
police she had known Coleman for about a month.
Police said neighbor children then alerted two residents of the
complex that a toddler had stopped breathing inside an apartment.
The two residents rushed into an apartment and found the
16-month-old boy lying on a bed alone in the apartment, his lips blue
and apparently not breathing, the warrant said.
The tot's mother returned from work and went to Sunrise Hospital and
Medical Center, where the toddler was placed on life support. Doctors
and later a coroner's examination revealed that the boy had bruises on
his face, head and ribs, and that there was vomit in his lungs, the
warrant said. A medical report on Lamaj Terry indicated his injuries
were from "definite physical abuse."
Lamaj Terry died at the hospital Thursday after being pronounced brain dead and removed from life support.
Police said they believe Coleman may have fled to Los Angeles.
Anyone with information about Jacquise Coleman or where he can be found is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555.

Re: LAMAJ TERRY - 16 months (2009)/ Convicted: Jocquise Coleman - Las Vegas NV
A preliminary hearing for a teenager accused of fatally beating a toddler boy last year has been set.
Jocquise Coleman, 19, is facing one count of murder by child abuse
and two counts of child abuse and neglect with substantial bodily harm.
A preliminary hearing in the matter has been set for Feb. 26 after a
status check today in justice court on the autopsy results of
16-month-old Lamaj Terry, which are expected to be ready later this
week, Chief Deputy District Attorney Vicki Monroe said.
An arrest report indicates Coleman was taking care of the child on
Sept. 16 at an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Spyglass Hill
Drive while the boy’s mother was at work. He had been caring for the
boy while she worked for the past four or five days, she told police.
They had been in a dating relationship for about a month.
That afternoon, children from the neighborhood alerted two residents
of the complex that a toddler had stopped breathing inside an
apartment. They found the boy lying on a bed alone in the apartment,
his lips blue and apparently not breathing, reports indicate.
Authorities responded and the boy was taken to Sunrise Hospital,
where he was placed on life support in the pediatric intensive care
unit. The next day, he was pronounced brain dead and was taken off life
support, resulting in his death.
A medical examination revealed the boy had bruises on his face, head
and ribs, and that there was vomit in his lungs, the report said. A
medical report on Lamaj indicated his injuries were the result of
physical abuse.
Police arrested Coleman on Sept. 23. He is being held in the Clark County Detention Center without bond.

Las Vegas man sentenced for killing toddler
By FRANCIS McCABE
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
A 22-year-old Las Vegas man was sentenced on Thursday to 13 to 40 years in prison for killing a 16-month-old child in September 2009.
Jocquise Coleman was a teenager when prosecutors said he killed Lamaj Terry, who died from an unknown blunt force trauma to his head and abdomen. Coleman, then 18, was the boyfriend of the child’s mother and was caring for the toddler while she was at work.
In August, Coleman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse and neglect with substantial bodily harm.
The baby’s mother, Brittany Terry, testified at the sentencing hearing that she could forgive Coleman, but would never forget. No parent should have to suffer the pain of losing a child, Terry said through tears.
Judge Jerry Tao gave Coleman a chance to speak, but he declined.
Prosecutors said Lamaj was left in Coleman’s care for several days when Brittany Terry, then 19, was at work.
Coleman and Terry had been dating for about a month.
Paramedics found Lamaj unresponsive in an apartment at 5150 Spyglass Hill Drive, near Charleston and Nellis boulevards.
Two residents at the complex rushed into the apartment after hearing shouts that the toddler was unresponsive. They told investigators that he had bruises on his head and face and that his lips were blue.
Coleman fled but was arrested a couple of days later.
