Baby abandoned in shoebox "NASSAU COUNTY, NY: A Nassau County, New York newborn is delighting nurses and doctors a day after she was abandoned in a shoe box on the ground floor of an apartment building. The mother will have some explaining to do, if investigators can find her. When a resident found the infant police are calling Baby Jane dropped inside a locked lobby-they say the day-old girl had been there for about an hour. "She appears to be in good condition. The umbilical cord was still attached. It was tied off with dental floss," said Detective Ray Cote with the Nassau County Police Department,” ...."

"Nassau County police are searching for the person who left a newborn baby girl in a Timberland shoebox.


A newborn baby was found stuffed in a shoebox and dumped in the lobby of a Long Island apartment building, cops said Monday.
The girl was less than a day old when she was discovered by a man who heard a noise and peeked inside a Timberland work boots box around 9 p.m. Sunday in Hempstead, L.I.

Wrapped in a yellow blanket, the girl now named Baby Hope was in a shoebox on the floor of the lobby at 5 Lafayette Ave. when a resident opened the front door and found her, police said. It was about 9:10 p.m.

She appeared to be less than a day old, police said, her umbilical cord tied off with dental floss, her skin light in color.

"HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (WPIX) - Bail has been set at a half a million dollars for the Long Island mom accused of abandoning her newborn in a shoebox in the lobby of a Hempstead apartment building.

Xiomara Gamez, 25, was arraigned on charges of reckless endangerment, child abandonment and child endangerment at First District Court in Hempstead. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Prosecutors say Gamez has a drug addiction and has six other children who live with their father. They say she admitted to being addicted to cocaine during her latest pregnancy.

The Long Island woman who dumped her baby in a shoebox is a crack-addicted hooker with six other kids, police said Thursday."She was down on her luck. She supported herself by selling herself," Detective Lt. Ray Cote of the Nassau County Police Department said. Xiomara Gamez, 24, gave birth to the girl in the basement of an abandoned building, stuffed her in a Timberland box and left her in an apartment building lobby. Gamez told cops she chose the Hempstead, L.I., building because she knew there were several Hispanic families with kids living there. She said she is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador and abandoned the child because she feared deportation, police said. The baby's father, who was also in the country illegally, had already returned to his native Guatemala, investigators said. Gamez
has six kids, ages 9 months to 8 years, who live with her ex-husband.
She told cops she used crack during her last pregnancy. The
baby - initially called Hope by cops but apparently named Pearl - was
found with its umbilical cord still attached, tied off with dental
floss. Cops tracked down Gamez after getting a tip from a relative, and she was arrested Wednesday. A Nassau County
judge ordered Gamez held in lieu of $250,000 cash bail on child
abandonment and endangerment charges. She also was wanted on an
unrelated theft warrant.
