EDNANDA YOUNG - 9 months (2009) - Corona CA
A Moreno Valley methamphetamine user who beat his girlfriend's
9-month-old daughter so severely that he split the child's skull was
sentenced Friday to 25 years to life in prison.Riverside
County Superior Court Judge Patrick Magers handed down the maximum
allowable punishment for Robert Thomas Finley, who was convicted last
month of second-degree murder and assault on a child resulting in death. The 29-year-old defendant was living with the child's mother, Yolanda Young, at the time of the crime. On the night of Aug. 15, 2006, Finley was supposed to be watching Ednanda Young while her mother worked. At
some point, the defendant, possibly enraged over the child's crying,
pounded her multiple times on the left side of her face and head,
according to Deputy District Attorney Ambrosio Rodriguez.“The medical examiner said he had never seen anything like it before,” the prosecutor said shortly after Finley's conviction.Rodriguez noted that when the autopsy on the toddler was conducted, pieces of her skull just fell away.“It was brutal,” he said earlier. “She died instantly.”Rodriguez theorized that Finley was high on meth when he inflicted the injuries.“The investigators found a meth pipe in her crib and in the garage, where he spent most of the day,” Rodriguez said. The
tot's mother arrived home to find her baby not breathing. After she
called for an ambulance, Finley slipped out of the house and went on
the lam for 10 days, staying with another girlfriend in Hemet, where he
was arrested.
