WALHALLA — The bond for a man accused of killing his five-month-old daughter was cut in half Tuesday, increasing his chances of being free until his trial.
Circuit Judge James Williams reduced to $100,000 the bond for Matthew Taylor Hinton, 23, and left intact the 10 percent surety option by which Hinton could be freed by posting $10,000.
Hinton is accused in the Aug. 18 death of his daughter, Brianna R. Bright, who according to an autopsy died of a closed head injury resulting from blunt force trauma.
According to Seneca police, Hinton called 911 about 10:54 p.m. Aug. 16 and reported finding the child not breathing. Paramedics resuscitated her at the apartment on 116 Northwoods Drive, where Hinton and the child’s mother lived, before taking her to Oconee Medical Center and then on to Greenville.
The baby died two days later.
Judge Williams in September set Hinton’s bond at $200,000.
Chip Price, Hinton’s attorney, repeated arguments from September that his client had not caused intentional harm to his daughter, that he had ties to Oconee and that he could have fled at any time in the three days between his daughter’s death and his arrest.
“The bottom line is he loved his daughter,” Price said.
If released, Hinton would live with his mother in Greenville County, Price said.
Assistant Solicitor Lindsey Simmons said the Solicitor’s Office still considered Hinton a danger to the community and a flight risk.
Simmons said information pertaining to the case had developed that reinforced that opinion, including prior girlfriends of Hinton who spoke of a history of violence.
Hinton’s record includes a 2007 charge of simple assault and battery.
