BRUNSWICK — A Glynn County jury convicted Daryl Keon Jones of murder and cruelty to children Thursday in the 2009 beating death of his girlfriend’s child.
Brianna Hester was 17 months old when she suffered severe face and neck injuries April 30, 2009, from being slammed repeatedly into the floor at her mother Kim Hester’s home. She died the next day in a hospital when her mother allowed physicians to remove life support equipment.
The jury deliberated less than two hours before returning its verdict at the end of the four-day trial, District Attorney Jackie Johnson said.
Superior Court Judge Anthony Harrison then sentenced Jones to life in prison.
It was the second trial for Jones, 35. In December 2010, a jury acquitted him of the more serious charge of malice murder and failed to reach a verdict on a felony murder charge. A mistrial was declared and Johnson said the case finally made it back to court after several delays, some because of Jones’ health.
As he did in the first trial, Jones’ son Alijha testified to seeing his father slam Brianna’s face into the floor.
Alijha, now 11, was 8 at the time and was home with his younger siblings and Brianna, who his father, a disabled Army veteran, was baby sitting. Kim Hester was in nursing school in Jacksonville and Jones kept the children at the house they shared.
Jones again testified in his own defense and raised the possibility that Alijha could have caused Brianna’s injuries, Johnson said.
“He wasn’t as forceful this time,’’ Johnson said.
Jones was arrested three days after Brianna’s death but had been free since early September 2010.
After Glynn County said his dialysis had cost the county more than $300,000 in one year, Harrison granted him a $25,000 bail and ordered him to wear an electronic ankle bracelet.
In his order, Harrison noted that Jones’ deteriorating health meant he was no longer a danger to the public.
Jones was sent back to jail Thursday.
