A Colorado Springs man was convicted today in the brutal beating death of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter.
A jury deliberated for two and half hours this afternoon before
finding Mark Alton Friend guilty of first-degree murder and five counts
of child abuse in the Jan. 15, 2008, death of Madyson Bogard.
Alton, 27, is being held without bond pending sentencing Oct. 13.
“We think it’s justice for Madyson, and we’re very happy,” said
Senior Deputy 4th Judicial District Attorney Brien Cecil. “The jury
listened to all the evidence and did its job.”
The girl’s mother, Chrystie Hardy, 25, has been charged as a
co-defendant. She is facing a murder trial scheduled for Sept. 28.
Investigators contend the child had been abused over three and a
half months - repeatedly struck in the head, slammed against a door and
bed frame and held underwater.
Emergency crews were called to the couple’s apartment at 3710
Rebecca Lane shortly before 2 a.m. on Jan. 15, 2008, on a report of a
child not breathing.
When they arrived, witnesses said they found the girl lying on the
floor of a small bedroom. She was shirtless and wearing jeans. Her eyes
were wide open, but she was unresponsive, they said.
They said Friend told them the girl had suffered a fall on the ice earlier that day.
