JUDE CAMERO - Newborn (2009) - Henderson NV
A local mother is accused of killing her own newborn child.
Henderson Police sent out the following media release:
A 19-year-old Henderson woman was held Thursday in the Henderson
Detention Center without bail accused of killing her newborn son.
Carmela Camero was booked into the Henderson Detention Center Wednesday night
on a murder charge. She is accused of killing the child after giving
birth to the baby Sunday at her home on Desert Pond Avenue, near
Horizon Ridge Parkway and Paradise Hills Drive.
She called a hospital Monday morning saying she delivered the baby and the
baby stopped breathing. Police and paramedics were dispatched to the
home and found the newborn was dead.
Detectives continued to investigate the death. After talking with Camero again
Wednesday night, detectives accused her of hiding the pregnancy,
delivering the child by herself in the home and then killing the child.
In 2001, the Safe Haven Infant Protection Act was signed into law allowing
a parent to drop off an infant without fear of arrest or prosecution.
The parent or parents can bring a baby less than 30 days old to any
hospital, urgent care facility, fire station or police station. The
appropriate government child protection agency will immediately take
the newborn into custody and place the infant in a foster or
pre-adoptive home. The information about this law can be found in
Nevada Revised Statutes 432B.640.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Henderson Police Department at
267-5000. Anyone who wishes to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers
at 385-5555. You may be eligible for a cash reward.

A baby boy is dead and Henderson
Police say the newborn's 19-year-old mother is to blame. Police say
Carmela Camero hid her pregnancy and suffocated her baby just hours
after giving birth. The young woman told police she feared
the consequences if her mother found out she was pregnant. According to
Camero, that's why she made the decision to end her son's life. The one thing authorities want to make clear is that there are
options for people who find themselves in situations just like this
one. It was a disturbing afternoon in a quiet Henderson neighborhood after a 19-year-old became the center of a death investigation. But
what Danielle and Matthew Schofield didn't know was that the young
woman who lived just a few doors down was pregnant and she had given
birth to a son this past Sunday in her bathtub. "There was half a dozen cops cars, ambulance, couple CSI. And then about 8 pm, we noticed the coroner showed up." Camero's 16-year-old neighbor, who asked not to be identified, told News 3 she had heard the baby. "Sunday night I heard a baby crying around 9:30 pm. And all of a sudden, it just stopped. Randomly, just stopped." Anita Roman: And you had no idea what was going on next door? Neighbor:
No. Actually, I thought they were putting the baby to sleep. But the
cry was just so horrifying, my heart was racing. It was really sad. You
could tell that something was wrong. According to the police
report, Camero admitted she gave birth Sunday afternoon; later that
evening, the newborn started to make coughing sounds. Afraid
that her mother would hear him, Camero says she made the decision to
bring the baby close to her breast and block his ability to breathe. But beyond the crime is a system in place that could have helped this woman. Scott
Allison, spokesperson for Clark County Fire, says the Safe Haven Infant
Protection Act of 2001 would have allowed Camero to drop the baby off
at any hospital, fire station, or police station without prosecution. "Maybe
she was intimidated, scared, or whatever. But if she would have known
about the law and acted upon it, all she would have had to done is
taken that baby to a local fire station, handed it over, turned around,
and walked away. And she probably wouldn't be in the situation she is
in now." The Safe Haven law permits anyone to do the same, as long as the baby is less than 30 days old. "That law is designed to protect that child and also, if you will, to protect the mother," Allison continues. Any
baby dropped off at a hospital, fire station, or police station is
given immediate medical attention and placed in foster care or a
pre-adoptive home. For more information on this law, log on to the Child Welfare Information Gateway web site. Camero
told police she hid her pregnancy from her mother because she was
afraid that if she had kept the baby, she wouldn't receive any support
or have a way to raise him. Henderson Police say Camero was arrested
for murder because she admitted that she intended to suffocate her
baby.

A woman accused of suffocating her newborn this
week is the same girl who dumped a baby in the trash at a Las Vegas
casino three years ago, police said Friday.Carmela Camero, 19,
told police she gave birth to a baby boy at her Henderson home Sunday
and called paramedics the next day when the child stopped breathing. She was arrested two days later and charged with murder.
Authorities said they were suspicious of Camero’s story, because in
2006 she admitted dumping another baby in a garbage chute at the Mirage
hotel. A then-16-year-old Camero told police the baby was stillborn
and, in a panic, she wrapped the baby in a towel and put it in the
trash. The newborn was found on a conveyor belt of the resort’s trash processing facility. The
Clark County district attorney decided not to prosecute Camero because
authorities said they could not prove intent, due to the baby being
stillborn. This week, following her arrest, Camero claimed didn’t
know she was pregnant and took a bath Sunday night to ease what she
described as back pain.According to her arrest report, Camero
told police she gave birth in the bathtub. After sterilizing a pair of
scissors, she cut the umbilical cord and put the child on the bed while
she left to buy baby supplies.Later that night, police said she picked up the baby and held it against her chest until it stopped breathing.“All
she would have had to have done is take that newborn baby once she
delivered it, wrapped it, taken it to a fire station, police station or
a hospital,” said Clark County Fire Department representative Scott

Re: JUDE CAMERO - Newborn (2009) - Henderson NV
Three years ago, in June 2006, Mirage
employees discovered a newborn baby girl with her umbilical cord still
attached... dead in a hotel dumpster. "There were other
options as opposed to what happened. It's just sad because it's a
child," said Metro Lt. Lew Roberts during the police investigation of
that 2006 incident. Sadness seems to have followed Carmela Camero from one pregnancy to the next.
"In
2006 we did have a case that involved this particular parent, this
mother," Clark County Coroner Mike Murphy told Contact 13. At the time, Camero was just 16 years old. And although the baby girl in the dumpster was found to be hers, she was never charged with a crime. "The ultimate cause of death was considered to be undetermined, as well as the manner of death," Murphy explained. Because of that, police say they couldn't build a case. But now, it's a different story. Camero is 19 years old, and with another apparently unwanted pregnancy, the teen is facing murder charges. "She
did hide her pregnancy, then she had the baby, unfortunately after that
she took the baby's life and that's why we arrested her," said
Henderson Police Officer Todd Rasmussen. According to the
police report, Camero was afraid her mother would kick her out of the
house and that she and the baby "would have to live in the ghetto
(because they'd have no support) and that would be no way to bring him
up." She was afraid she'd be viewed as a "whore for having
the baby while not being married and her son would be considered a
bastard child." Fearing "they'd have a terrible life," she told police she decided to use her own breast to suffocate her baby boy. This latest case raises new questions about the little girl tossed into the trash in 2006. "As
a result of the previous case, we'll be looking to see if there's any
additional nuances in those cases or direct relationships between the
two cases, but again, all the investigative issues still have to be
completed," Murphy explained.

Re: JUDE CAMERO - Newborn (2009) - Henderson NV
Carmela Camero gave birth to a son Sunday afternoon while she was in a bathtub, waist-deep in water.
The 19-year-old's mother was at the Henderson home but did not even know her daughter was pregnant.
Camero was afraid of what would happen if her mother learned her secret.
That evening, the impending consequences of having a child out of
wedlock weighed heavily on Camero. According to Henderson police, she
smothered the newborn in a moment of desperation.
"It was at that time she made the decision to bring her baby close
to her breast and force the breast onto his face," states a Henderson
police report released Thursday. "She knew bringing him that close
would block his ability to breathe and he would eventually die. She
held him in that position for several minutes until she knew he was no
longer alive."
Henderson police arrested Camero on Wednesday on one count of
murder. She is being held without bail at the Henderson Detention
Center.
According to the Clark County coroner's office, Camero's baby was
named Jude, although it's unclear who named him. As of Thursday, the
office had not issued an official cause and manner of the infant's
death.
Nevada has a Safe Haven law that lets parents surrender babies up to
30 days old at locations such as fire stations, police departments and
hospitals.
"There are options if there is an unwanted child," Henderson police
spokesman Keith Paul said. "This bill was signed into law specifically
to try and prevent the death of infants."
The arrest report said Camero slept with the infant after
suffocating him at her home near Horizon Ridge Parkway and Paradise
Hills Drive. She lived there with her mother and her mother's boyfriend.
Police were notified of the birth by officials at St. Rose Dominican
Hospital, de Lima campus, who said a woman reported delivering an
apparently "healthy" baby that stopped breathing. According to the
report, Camero didn't alert hospital officials about her dead son until
11:38 a.m. Monday, the day after she gave birth.
Police and paramedics were dispatched to the home and discovered the dead baby.
On Sunday, the day police contend she killed her newborn, Camero
said on her Facebook page: "Ugh ... Less than 48 hours till school once
again begins. Damn."
She then commented to a friend that she is becoming a nurse.
Spencer Stewart, a spokesman for Nevada State College, said Camero is enrolled but has not chosen a major.
According to the police report, Camero handled the birth alone.
"She delivered the placenta. She placed the placenta in a bucket and
cradled the baby as she walked to her bedroom to retrieve a pair of
scissors.
She wrapped the baby in a towel. She carried the baby to her bedroom
and placed him on her bed with pillows around him. The baby was not
crying, but was breathing."
Camero told police she had not known she was pregnant. When she
started getting back pains, she went upstairs to take a bath, hoping
that would ease the pain.
The report said that during the teen's labor, Camero's mother went
to check on her because she had been in the bathroom for an "extended
period of time." Camero's mother knocked on the door, but her daughter
told her everything was OK.
When she left the bathroom, Camero told her mother she was going to the gym.
She later fielded a phone call from her mother, who asked her to
pick up groceries. Camero returned home, ate dinner, and went to sleep,
the report said.
The report does not say where the baby was during that time.
When interviewed by police on Wednesday, Camero changed her story about the baby's death several times.
"She was afraid her mother was going to kick her out of the house if
she found out she had a baby," the report said. "She was afraid she
would be viewed as a whore for having the baby while not being married
and her son would be considered a bastard child."
Similar cases involving unprepared or panicked parents have happened before in Clark County.
In June 2006, a dead baby girl was found in a trash processing area
of The Mirage. Police determined that a 16-year-old girl was the
mother. She had concealed her pregnancy and given birth to a stillborn
infant at the resort. Police said she panicked and discarded the body.
On Mother's Day 2008, the body of a baby boy was discarded inside a
women's restroom at the Excalibur. It was discovered by a casino staff
member. The infant was found in a trash can, shrouded in a pillowcase
and towels. The bundle was tucked inside an Excalibur gift bag. Las
Vegas police have not identified the child's parents.

Re: JUDE CAMERO - Newborn (2009) - Henderson NV
OMG...another newborn baby killer. She needs to serve a long sentence and should be sterilized so she can't kill anymore babies. Why the heck didn't she get an abortion? At least that's legal.

They would kick her out of the house for getting pregnant. But murdering her own baby is OK?
Well, hopefully she will never have to worry about housing again. I hope the state provides that for the rest of her miserable life.

They may have kicked her out but I bet they would have kept that poor sweet baby. At the least, she could have dropped it off at a hospital or fire dept. with no questions asked. These stupid mothers murdering their newborns need to be put in prison but so many of them are let off. It's so frustrating.

There are so many people who are doing everything in their power to adopt a baby. There are not enough babies up for adoption. The monsters could give up the baby with no questions asked. Yet daily babies are murdered for the same sick reason as this girl gave.
I just don't get it. Life is precious and it is pure evil to snuff it out.
