Families with missing loved ones were
given new hope when a woman in California, held prisoner for eighteen
years, was reunited with her family. Some Capital Region families say they're waiting for the same miracle.
It has been more than five years since Craig Frear disappeared. The
Scotia-Glenville student was seventeen at the time. His family still
aches to see him. Craig's mother, Veronica Frear, says, "Life is never the same, it loses its shine, its luster, it really does." Craig's brother is getting married in a few weeks, his little sister is now in college. Craig's spirit is always with them. Veronica
Frear adds, "We do refer to him and hope and pray and say, yes, he
would like this or when I make his favorite dinner. It's hard. It's
hard to get through every day life." Yet the miraculous story
of Jaycee Lee Dugard, found eighteen years later, offers Veronica new
hope that one day she'll come home to find Craig sitting in her kitchen. "Yes,
years have passed," Veronica Frear said, "but that doesn't mean we
won't find him and that doesn't mean there's not hope for all of us." Of course, Dugard was held captive and allegedly raped - a reality that makes the Frear's anxious. "You
live with this gut wrenching fear everyday - what is my child going
through? What has my child gone through? What is his condition? Are
they wanting us? Are they missing us?" Veronica wondered. She is constantly pushing to find Craig; on the phone with State Police nearly every day. "I just want to someday be able to touch him, and hold him and smell him and have my son back in my arms," Veronica Frear said.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Veronica Frear takes her first look at a brand new billboard aimed at finding her son Craig.
Frear says it's given her family a shot of hope again.
"I can't tell you how much I appreciate everything they did,
really," Frear says. "You need that (hope). Without that, you just
want to crawl up and die, you do."
Craig disappeared at the age of 17 on June 27, 2004, walking home
from a friend's apartment in Scotia. Now more than five years later,
his family says it's important to keep Craig's name and face in the
public eye.
"[I'm] just hoping that it's a reminder to people, and maybe somebody will have some information," Frear says.
The people behind the effort are HVCC law professor Cathy Lindberg
and her students. Lindberg, herself, has had her own child taken, and
she says she and her class just wanted to do what they could to help.
"There's a family that's heartbroken," she says. "I find it very
disheartening if, as a community, we don't come forth and bring this
boy home."
The billboard company, Lamar, donated the space for Craig's picture
on two billboards: one is in Troy along Rt. 378 and Stow Ave., the
other one is in Schenectady at I-890 and Broadway, just a few miles
from where Craig was last seen. Lamar estimates 32,686 vehicles drive
by both locations every day. They're scheduled to stay up for at least
the next month, maybe longer.
"It may trigger somebody's mind or memory," says Bill Frear, Craig's father. "You got to keep the hope alive."
While it might not be a new lead, per se, it is a sign the Frears
hope will bring about new clues on just where their son might be.
"I'll come home and he'll be there, that's what I'm hoping for," his mother says.

Missing New York State Teen: Craig Frear, 17, vanished in June 2004

(CBS) Craig Frear of Scotia, N.Y. in Schenectady County was 17 when he was last seen on June 27, 2004.

His mother, Veronica Frear, told Crimesider, "The day my son went missing is etched in my brain." "I had spoke(sic) to him on the phone...he was at a friend's house...and he said that he was on his way home," she said.
Craig was believed to be walking home from the Cambridge Manor Apartments, near a wooded area, although he had driven a car to visit a girlfriend at her mother's apartment.
According to Craig's brother, Matthew Frear, "He was last seen walking towards railroad tracks, and...in the direction of our house. He was never seen again."
As the day wore on, his family went looking for Craig: "We had walked back in those woods later that day probably about 5 o'clock to see if maybe he had tripped or anything such as that," his mother said.
There was no sign of him.
"When the sun started going down, and friends were calling back, and nobody knew where he was...I really started getting scared," said Veronica Frear.
CBS affiliate WRGB has reported that police don't think Craig Frear was at all despondent. They said although he had recently lost a job at a Price Chopper supermarket and had broken up with a girlfriend, he had been visiting a new girlfriend that day.
As Craig's mother puts it, "As far as the police are concerned if he had committed suicide then they would have found him by now."
In Oct. 2008, Lt. John Agresta of the New York State Police told WRGB police believe Craig "did not run away or that he's harmed himself. We believe some kind of harm has come to him."
New York State Police investigator Gloria Coppola told Crimesider that on the day he disappeared, Craig had argued with his mother on the phone after his parents found out he had lost his job - which Craig hadn't told them. Craig told his mother he'd be home in 10 minutes, says Coppola, but when he left his girlfriend's he walked away from where he'd parked his car. Coppola thinks Craig's father may have been waiting for him at the car, and that Craig chose to walk in a different direction to avoid a confrontation.
It's believed Craig wasn't carrying any I.D., and nothing else belonging to him has turned up since that June day in 2004.
"He didn't have any identification, he didn't have money, he didn't have his car. He didn't have anything on him...so the possibilities of where he could have gone are extremely limited - really it's a mystery," said his brother, Matthew.
Born Oct. 14, 1986, when Craig Frear went missing he was 5'11" and 190 lbs. He has brown eyes, and red hair, and was last seen wearing blue jean shorts, a white long-sleeved t-shirt, and Adidas sneakers with three black stripes.
